I have tried before, and I've actually got a few books about learning how to draw, but I've always been "too busy" to really practice at it. I consider myself more of a writer anyway, at least that's my excuse lol.

What kind of scenarios are you writing? If you've got some skill in it, you can pair it up with your drawing skills to illustrate what you're writing. Like manga/comics, ya know? That's what I'd really like to do, but my drawing skills are poor atm lol.

My secret? Lots of practice and you need to be able to see yourself in your work; like role-play. You need to see yourself either in the background, watching what is going on, or through the eyes of a character. Also when describing scenes, you probably want to describe only so much so that a person's imagination can fill in the rest. Does that make sense?

Also the #1 thing I can tell you is that you should find a manga, book or comic, where the author is highly rated, and analyze their work. Reading best sellers in a genre that you like should work wonders. I mean, you want to form your own style but jumping off of a best seller's diving board should take you where you want to go.

It does help a lot, thanks. Very good advice. You should put that in a journal/tutorial so others can get that understanding. I actually have just the book to take knowledge from. Have you heard of Octavia E. Butler? Her books are amazing!

I'd say I usually start off with dystopia novels. Y'know; rebels vs. some tyrannical ruler of the world or something like that.

The hardest part for me to do is go into background stories. I mean really get in depth with my characters. My sister has recently been bugging me about this. I'd say it is time to work on something novelish!

No problem, i'm happy to give any kind of advice. I think once I start to submit more stories, I'll go ahead and do a journal just like that. I had not heard of Octavia before, so I went ahead and wiki'd her. Do you have a favorite book of her's? Lemme know and I'll add it to the list of books that I need to read.

I tend to go for more supernatural, science fiction and fantasy novels. Sorta like Harry Potter I guess.

Would you care to send me examples of what you've got story-wise? I could critique them for you if you want. Your sister wrote a very good back story for her Dynasty Warriors OC, Jiao Mai.

You know it also depends on the story you are writing so a character's back story may not need to be complex or cliche.

Hell, I've got plans for another original story where a magician has cast a comical double-edged curse on a few people who all eventually become the main cast of a plot that really has nothing to do with them, initially. One of the characters is man, who used to be a hard-on-his-luck jester in large kingdom. Well his curse makes him hallucinate off and on for weeks until he actually becomes the creature that he thought himself to be. That's his back story. Short and simple and it will work.

The book I just got done reading is called "Lillith's Brood". Mankind made earth uninhabitable. Those that survived the happening, woke up in the hands of in the hands of mysterious captors.

Another book is called "Wild Seed". People with super powers.

Octavia is a master of sci fi books.

Those short and simple style backgrounds is a good idea, lol. I never really thought about it. In retrospect, I realize that a lot of books actually do that all the time. Some don't do it at all. The author just explains their current position in life and go on from there.

I think i got one story, but its just a scene and not even close to being finished.

Exactly. However you choose to portray any of your characters, make sure you keep your intentions clear. Whether the character is supposed to be well known to the reader or very mysterious. You don't always have to let the reader know of the character's backstory in their past but maybe their future or even their present. Up to you really, what makes a compelling story and character to you?

Sorry about the long hiatus in replying. I went to Malibu, Canada for a Christian Camp. Twas awesome. Another annoying part to this was that before i could send you a previously made reply, I left the computer and my brother closed the window. =/

Alright these are both long books. But i will try.

Wild Seed
Doro is a lonely and undying soul who takes over people's bodies to survive. He has lived for a VERY long time. His goal is to breed people with supernatural powers (mind manipulation, healing, telekinesis) to create a race like himself; immortal.
Anyanwu is an immortal Doro stumbles upon. She can shape shift into anything she tastes, she can heal any poison and create any remedy inside herself.
Doro convinces her to join him and the story goes on from there. The entire series, is so much more though and is really jumpy. It goes from the far past to a very far future. It gets really complicated but at the same time still compelling.

The Lillith's Brood Series
So the things that saved some of the humans are somewhat humanoid aliens. They are called Onkali. The best way to describe an Onkali in a nutshell is; An all grey, medusa headed, too many fingered and toed, incredibly smart, humanoid being with a biological chemistry set inside them. There is a male, a female, and a sexless counterpart called an "Ooloi". The Ooloi brings them the two sexes together and is the most complicated of them all.
The Onkali want to restore the human race, but at a cost. The Onkali want to combine themselves with the humans.
If that makes any sense lol. Well you can tell they are very complicated things.

A compelling character to me is one that is quiet and reserved and who's past remains secret until it is revealed throughout the story. What about you? What are your favorite types of

Wild Seed sounds interesting, though the names threw me off lol. I wonder if they have the book on audiobook or e-book? Speaking of travelling from the past into the future, have you seen the trailer for Cloud Atlus? [link] It looks amazing. I was hooked instantly when i saw it.

AS for the Lilith's Brood series, if you could have seen my head tilt as I read your description... other than that, it also sounds interesting. Do both of these stories take place on earth?

I like characters who are wild, fun-loving, sometimes loud and somewhat unpredictable. But who also know when its time to be serious. If you've ever seen Samurai Champloo, I'm the Mugen to your Jin. In fact, his style is how i like to fight when I'm wielding a katana.

Oh, might as well mention that the Harry Potter series was the last books I had read. Have you read them?
