Hi, man. I really like your artwork and was wondering if I could use the Digimon in "Rail and Digimon" as a part of a Spirit Evolution Line on this website: digimonforumrp.proboards.com . I do know that you have a statement saying you cannot use it for x purposes but I figured asking wouldn't hurt. Nonetheless, cheers.

Cool. Is there is enough academic drawing in your courses? I'm just wondering what is animation education today.

JustAlex09 In reply to Waldschnepfe [2011-07-27 23:37:28 +0000 UTC]

The animation program I'm in forcuses more on 3D work, like what you see in "Toy Story" and "How to Train your Dragon". The program itself is still relatively new (there are litterally only three groups of students) and we're pretty much all guinea pigs at the moment since they're still trying to figure out exactly what to teach, what works and what doesn't.

Our first year had all the drawing courses, but once we got to our second year, we moved away from 2D animation completely (something a few of us want back). 2D animation programs are probably more develloped, since that type of animation has been around longer. But it really depends on what program (and school) you go into.

That asside, I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "academic drawing". If you mean classes that teach general drawing like anatomy and stuff... you can pretty much get courses for that anywhere. Heck, you can get detailed books of it from your local library.

So you have a quite quick shift of prgram from 2d to 3d? Yeah,i meant that, it's mostly french term.Anatomy, perspective, composition etc. I currently get one, but i think it's not enough for me thogh it's good.

JustAlex09 In reply to Waldschnepfe [2011-07-28 04:06:45 +0000 UTC]

The program I'm in caled "3D Animation and CGI" and I believe it was originally supposed to focus equally on 2D and 3D but because we couldn't really find any good 2D animation teachers, we shifted to more 3D work. It's actually really hard to find teachers for my program.

But yes, in our first year we had perspective, anatomy and composition classes, along with 2D animation in Flash. All of this you can learn though various tutorials in books and videos found at your library and all over the internet though.

The only time a drawing/animation class wouldn't be good is if your teacher either didn't know what they were doing or was just really bad at trying to teach. It also depends on the school. An animation program at one school may be really good while the same couse at another school will be really bad. Most of the time the quality of the program is directly dependant on what the teachers are like and how much money is being spent on the program itself.

Also. Practice. Practice, practice, practice. It takes time to get good at this kind of stuff.

Good animation-teachers? Canada is know to have an exellent animation education, even beter then in USA, so it's strange for me to hear. But ok, i'll deal with it.
Ad another question, please. Have storyboard artist different education or the same as regular animators? Thanks for answering!

JustAlex09 In reply to Waldschnepfe [2011-07-28 19:26:22 +0000 UTC]

What I meant is that you can have a teacher that is an amasing animator, but absolutely fails when it comes to trying to properly explain the dynamics of animation to a class. I had one teacher who I found was a little bit like this. It just makes trying to learn the stuff a bit harder than normal.

I think storyboarding is included in the animation program -if it's a career program like mine, anyway-. I'm not positive about 2D, but in 3D yes. I had storyboarding just this past semester, and I'm using that storyboard to plan my final animation. In a 3D program you have the option of becomming an Animator, Character Rigger/Designer, Storyboard Artist, Enviromnent Artist, etc... so we're taught a bit of everything from those areas.

I use a dinky old Wacom Sapphire pen tablet. It's not the greatest, but it gets the job done. (It's also pretty old) Although I used to just use a good ol' pencil and paper then scan it in (still do sometimes, but i redraw it in photoshop).
