Hey, I wanted to comment under your "full body attempt", but i couldn't add drawing there.

1.The general idea of drawing full body is pretty simple: draw 3 more or less equal circles. One will represent head, and other two front part of the body and back part of the body.
2.Then You connect circles in manner that it would somehow look like a pony. Add legs.

I'm in no way expert, but I hope that helps. And after that You can experiment with placement, size etc. of the circles to make pony look as You want.
