I'm really interested in Architecture and 3D rendering, and your quick mock-ups and WIPs seem like really great ways to go about it
I really want to try these things. I have 3Ds Max for free because I'm a student, and I have PS for post-processing, also the cheaper student price.
But VRay costs quite a bit, and there's no educational discount. How could I possibly get results as spectacular as yours?
Such as the underground entrance WIP, and the random 5-hour hallway?

completely forgot about it, but you should use mentalray witch ships with 3ds max. you can get very similar results with mental ray.

Well I've been trying to render things, like text for instance, and it always come out black.
I add a skylight and it just doesn't do anything, or I'm trying to do an ambient occlusion pass.
I just don't know what to select in the render dialog. There's so many boxes where you can choose mentalray.
Hopefully I can work it out when trying to use NOX

You could try out the 30 day demo, available on vray.us
Or you could try the free NOX renderer, although it doesn't support bump maps, but at least it is free and it looks pretty good.
