Hey man how are you doing? How did the Guild hall work out for ya? Hope everything is cool, keep drawin'!

The Guildhall, while a great education, did not turn out as promising as I had hoped. My cohort's artists were the first group to graduate without having jobs lined up and a year later some of us are still jobless.
Did you ever apply and if so what came of that?

EddieMunoz In reply to Kezef [2009-06-18 12:24:22 +0000 UTC]
That terrible to hear, it might be the economic times.
Keep trekin' maybe we can collaborate on a project or something. Do you hang out on any forums?
I never applied, It is still an option. I have a year to graduate college, so far I'm debt free and I would like it to stay that way so the Guild Hall might be outside my reach, being semi-self taught ain't so bad...

Your artwork is easily of the quality that most students have when they finish the Guildhall and many of them started with way less experience. The art professors, the Walker brothers, there are amazing and if you really wanted someone to push you further they'd be the people to do it. You'd also get a lot of exposure to the video game industry and get a feel of what working in it would be like. Alternatively you could skip it entirely and start applying to get a job when you're finished with college. I think you'd be sucessful with either option.

Thanks
When I met one of the Walker brothers he seemed pretty cool so I donβt doubt he knew his stuff, but still the decisions are difficult to make.
So what are you gonna do now?

Well how are you going to improve you're portfolio when they don't tell you what they want? As far I'm concerned you have some pretty rad stuff, like the space marine. Have you produced any art while out of The Guild Hall?
I remember when I talked to Walker, he mentioned that he kept in contact with his students and gave them advice while they were looking for a job.

I haven't produced much art outside of the Guildhall so part of the not having a job thing is my fault. I've felt kinda burned out since leaving the Guildhall and personal life crap keeps getting in the way. Recently though I've been sketching more which is always good, just wish I had a scanner now.

Na I understand how it is, there are times when i just feel burned out and others where I just want to draw. Are you excited about zbrush 4?
π: 0 β©: 1
Kezef In reply to EddieMunoz [2009-06-24 15:28:44 +0000 UTC]
I've used Mudbox but have not used Zbrush. I take it that you like the program and are very excited about it, yes? If you've used Mudbox before how would you compare the two?
π: 0 β©: 1
EddieMunoz In reply to Kezef [2009-06-25 21:45:49 +0000 UTC]
Where do I start? Zbrush is awesome the interface takes some getting use to, but after that its great, its seems everyday that I learn something new in the program.
*Sub-tools are awesome. Allows even the crappiest computer to reach high polygon numbers
*Transpose Is great lets you pose and make huge changes to a sculpture very quickly
*The brushes are pretty awesome, So are the MatCaps
*Are there are tons of little features which are cool, Projection master is cool it allows for hard surface models, poly painting.. etc [link]
I haven't tried Mudbox 2.0 but I did try it 1.0 and I liked that I could just start sculpting, it was limited and by 2 million polys my system was slowing down and I had a decent computer
From what I've seen Mudbox 2.0 should be awesome it takes advantage of all the ram you, video card and Cpu have, while Zbrush only takes 4 gigs and you're Cpu in to account. Plus real time texturing, so long Body Paint and real time render.. it looks great. [link]
I talked to an autodesk rep and he said with a quad core and 8 gigs of ram I should be able to hit 20 million and see no slow down so I'm going to try it soon.
But I dont know what Zbrush 4.0 will do... they just showed some previews and I'm sure its not the best things about the update. [link]
Oh and the Update is Free to people would already have 3.1 so SWEET!

Kezef In reply to EddieMunoz [2009-06-26 20:19:10 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I don't know half of what you're talking about unfortunately. My primary usage of Mudbox was for creating normal maps and texture maps for lower poly models. I really enjoyed sculpting with it but would frequently run into problems related to the polygon count of the model. I would frequently have to break up a model into sections in order to get the desired polycount to create the level of detail and then combine the normal maps in photoshop. It was somewhat of a time consuming and complicated process and I hate time consuming processes and complicated processes.

Yeah the polygon problem can be solved in Zbrush with Sub tools. And normal mapping is alot easier with Xnormal

The Walker brothers seriously are super human art machines. Without a doubt the best professors I've ever had.
As for me, I'm just trying to find a job wherever I can. I've been out of the Guildhall for a year now and no luck yet so it's time I get anything I can to support myself while looking for a better job. Not ideal by any means but I'm getting by at least.

Yeah, I remember walking in to the room and his eyes were blood shot bad, I was like WTF. Then he revealed that he had no sleep because he was drawing trying to make dead lines. Thats fucking cool, he seems hardcore I thought to my self.
Has the school trying to help ya at least? Where is you're portfolio? I went to you're old site and it seemed like it hadn't changed, I could be wrong. When you apply and aren't given a job are you at least told why?
π: 0 β©: 1
Kezef In reply to EddieMunoz [2009-06-20 17:14:58 +0000 UTC]
Sounds like it was Chad Walker. He stays awake for days at a time on a regular basis and his expression and attitude never changes, ever. Eric Walker, his twin brother who also teaches there, is more layed back and relaxed. He gets a little more sleep, but other than that he's pretty much the same. Chad and Eric are the best professors I've ever had.
Here's my Guildhall portfolio
[link]
The places I applied to usually would just give a "Thanks but no thanks" if they even replied at all, no interviews or art tests or anything. We were initailly given the impression that the school was supposed to help us get jobs but their involvement was somewhat exaggerated.

Because I'm lazy, I'm sorry I don't have the willpower to write comments on all your latest installments. Instead I offer to you a general overall idea of what each may have said: Awesome. I love the buffalo.
On every one.

Why thank you. The buffalo suprised me it turned out so well, because they're boring looking. No teeth or claws and tiny little boring horns.
