Have you read anything by August Derleth? Sorry if the question sounds silly.Β

No I have not, somewhat unfortunately. I'm sure it's good, but the whole "good/evil" thing attributed to his work has put me off... until now, at least.

dark-precipice In reply to KifkeyKrunchies [2014-03-10 10:55:54 +0000 UTC]

I've only read a couple of his stories, but I've found it surprisingly easy to cope with the good/evil angle - I simply imagine that it is a misinterpretation on the part of the human narrators, who seek to cope with the horrifying revelations, by attributing human qualities and concepts to distinctly non-human beings.

If anything, what really ticks me off is Lovecraft being specifically mentioned as a writer of weird tales (blatant advertisement much, August?) and then suddenly his stories turn out to be real??! I mean... it's too crude! I understand that Derleth wants everyone to read his favorite author, but he could've done it like, stylishly.

His writing style is surprisingly bearable, though. But maybe it's just my love for the genre.

So yeah... that's what I wanted to discuss with you. And to ask you if it's bad taste not to dislike Derleth as an author.

I believe the consensus in the fandom is to plot itself ignore Derleth's conventions... And the steal good names and descriptions.

Even I "borrowed" parts of the Chaugr Faugn story from Long, but twisted them with my own versions of the Tcho-Tcho to create something else... Something that vaguely connects to the stranger events mentioned in ch.7 of MoL.

Basically. Then again, the entire Cthulhu Mythos is an all-you-can-eat buffet, as far as canon is concerned.

Thank you (I just got back from getting proper shoes and my textbooks so I've been a bit busy)!

And Thanks for the birthday artwork. With your version of Morella, I never pictured her with such well groomed hair, but it works to show the disparity of time periods.

Yeah, I know you expected spikier hair, but I wanted the length of both hairdos to be more or less equal, for a more symmetrical image.

You misunderstand me, miss. The modern version is perfect, but I was expecting the Gothic Morella to have to have a more uneven, self-cut hairdo.

But it's very good nonetheless.

No problem. You, dark precipice and mr. author (though the latters potty mouth and hiatus of the ow my sanity webcomic is getting to me) are my main mythos fix right now,

Though a question persists: in a relationship between a young Sonia and a younger Howie (keeping the 7 year age difference) would the revelation of Winifred's philandering and VD calm Howie over the inherited madness fear or would it put him off sex even more (if that is possible)?

Awww, I'm glad to hear that! Yes, Dark-Precipice writes wonderfully and her drawings are simply adorable <3, (though I do not know who Mr.Author is)

About your question mmh, first of all I wonder why everyone has to rant about HPLs sexuality lol. (I mean, O.Wilde was homosexual and E.Heminguay married 4 times... so what? They're all terrific writers).
Honestly I don't know what kind of man Howard could have been, yet I and dark-precipice made our speculations here (in the comments [link] ) but we were focused on HPL self-esteem instead of his sexuality.
About him and Sonia, I plan to have them meet in my comic (in which they're respectively 12 and 19 years old) and their relationship can be summarized in "professional rivalry" since they both wish to publish their stories on the Miskatonic Universitary magazine. (she usually wins, lol)

As to Howie, I think the sex thing is a manifestation of what drove much of Lovecraft's body horror theme and alot of the "cursed heritage" thing in thinking the syphilis madness his father contracted was congenital. Well, that and getting his image of Sex from cold, clinical and Censored-in-the-Victorian-manner textbooks.

Good to hear your plans for both of your characters.

To be honest, my main schtick is to subvert the racism of the Yog-Sothothery. Mr Lovecrafts seeming asceticism is merely an interesting footnote (triggered in part by our exchange on how Sarah Philips probably kept her husbands adultery from her son) on what may have influcenced his fears and horror writing. In fact, the racism thing is what I'm going to reference in my next journal.

Thanks (:

I know that, yet I still find his racism more disturbing than the sex thing. But in spite of everything, if I had a time machine he would be the first I would like to meet in person. "Get out of here you eldritch italian abomination!"... yes, that would be great.
That man is a damn puzzle to me D:
