Hello! Sorry, I haven't been on DA in a while. I could say that cosmic forces of great consequence kept me away but the truth is much more mundane. I'm starting to put together supplies for a camping trip. What have you been up to?

Not much I just got a job at Joanns. I'm really excited about. I had to quit school. :/ I feel like I'm never going to get anywhere in life. Without an education I'm going to be stuck making minimum. I'm starting to wonder if that is what the government wants. I know its economical but still can't help but wonder. I've been dancing this dance since 2008. :/ Jobs awesome though I love the people that work there. Its a anti-drama work force which is awesome!!!

I feel terribly out of touch but what's Joanns? I was tempted to Google it to hide my ignorance but decided against it. That's really good that you're excited. If you can find a job for which you have enthusiasm and enjoyment than you've probably found the right job (at least for the time being). Unfortunate about school but it was probably better that you made a decision that will help support you and allow you to grow... and it seems like it was the right one considering you've already found work. I know that feeling of not going anywhere in life very well, sadly. You know, I do wonder about the government wanting people on minimum wage idea as well. When there was the whole touting of job growth going on a lot of people didn't realize that most of those jobs were minimum wage with no benefits and high turnover, not real livable jobs, and that fewer numbers on unemployment doesn't necessarily mean people have found work, just that their unemployment benefits ran out. Glad that you like the job and the coworkers, and that there's no drama. I've worked in a lot of places that felt like they were all drama, all the time. People would be living out soap operas in real life and I would just be trying to get my work done so I could go home, but everything got sucked into the drama like it was a black hole. Will probably have to delay my Utah camping trip (bad news) but its because my dad is flying out to visit me (good news) and we'll be camping at Mesa Verde and Canyon of the Ancients (he's always wanted to explore those two locations). Hope you are enjoying the new job, stay in touch.

Actually don't worry. I'm not surprised I'm not sure how many states have them. It's a sewing and crafts store. I am aware that they are pulling to have one in each state though. As for the minimum wage jobs, the government kept talking about growing the economy but what they also failed to tell America was that most of these jobs are going to be temporary as well. In fact that's all I've worked for the last few years since that's all there is. I'm glad your going to be able to see you dad as well I hope you enjoy your visit with him!
Definitely will stay in touch it's nice to have an active friend on DA!

Okay, relief, as I swipe an arm across my brow, thought I was getting old for a second there and was out of touch with something that I should definitely know about. Is it like a Michael's Craft Store? And, sadly, temporary for several reasons (high turnover, competition between over qualified individuals needing any work, generally poor management on ground, lack of benefits, small chance of promotion and meaningful pay increases). Unfortunately with the state of the job market, employers can get ridiculously skilled, experienced, and over qualified individuals and pay them next to nothing, work them half to death et cetera because of just how lousy the chances are of getting hired for commensurate work with proper pay anywhere. I've looked at jobs where I've met every single qualification (back when I was 22) and then some except they want a Masters or a Doctorate for work that clearly doesn't require it. Of course, I'm greatly enjoying college right now but will look into something part time just to bring in more income (maybe get an apartment with a fire place, that would be nice). But, it seems like (thankfully) there's more opportunity out west. Tell a company out east that you're a partially disabled combat veteran and they will say thank you for your service but will be scared to death of you (you can see it in their faces and reactions) and never hire or even call back, no matter skills, experience and qualification. They just think you have PTSD, killed babies, and will go on a shooting spree the moment the office forgets your birthday. Sad times. On a happier note, I'm quite excited about my dad visiting. We'll be camping at Mesa Verde and Canyon of the Ancients which should be pretty fantastic with the cliff dwellings and it being this time of year. Also, have you ever been out to the Dinosaur area to see the fossils on the Utah/Colorado border? And, how is Salt Lake City? Is it worth visiting/exploring? Hope you enjoyed your weekend and have a great week.

Actually it is like Micheal's but they have more there of certain things, there actually in direct competition with them.
Wow I'm really surprised and shocked that the east treats veterans like that. I know out here in Utah there is a strength of spirit, of love felt for our troops like no other. It's becoming rare for people here to not have respect for them. (Exceptions for be the youth who are blinded by liberal anti-war agenda's) but even so no everything is good in war and I understand that but much greatness came of it until a certain someone destabilized the middle east pulling out to early.... Sorry I hope this doesn't offend.
I think I've been to a Dinosaur place once. I think it was Thanksgiving Point? It was a blue chip field trip for the kids with excellent grades and behavior in jr. high.
Salt Lake City. Its really crowded and I find the roadways to be a little annoying but there is many places to go and lots of restaurants. If you like shopping you should check out the Gateway or the City Creek Center. I know we have tons of choices for food up there as well anything you can think of really. Everything is good really. If your downtown your so centralized everything is at your disposal. The Leonardo museum is in this area as well and a Library. Huge!!! Beautiful if you want pictures. Even if you aren't LDS, many people visit Temple Square and take pictures of the Temple, there are many gardens and beautiful structures in the area. I like that area of town it feels safe, two block over is okay but its a little scary waiting for the bus sometimes during the winter months. 200 - 400 S State Street but there are some cool stuff still there as well like the Bar and the Pie Hole have really cool art on the outside of the building. City Creek Center is just behind them a block. Yeah everything I mentioned is in that area.
Oh I was told to tell you that you should avoid Zion's till about Autumn or October. I guess its overly crowded and hard to have fun down there because of it. I was also told to mention that there are no cars allowed in Zion's but they have shuttles available for people, and to do some research before going on trails you may want to explore because the place I guess is really big. I haven't been there yet. I really want to go I've seen pictures though. Its really cool. I think you can hire trail guides at any of the parks around here, to be honest and they will take you on tours to the best or most iconic locations. Some places the tours are free and is just a park service rendered since people already pay to get in. You will have to check with that.

Hmm… what do they have more of/do differently? How well are they doing in their competition?
The east is a bastion of liberal elitism and has been since the Vietnam War. And, what you’ve seen in “youth who are blinded” is the general state of affairs for many people, a lot of whom, interestingly enough, came to their wealth and prosperity during the Reagan administration. The vast majority of colleges and media outlets (newspapers and news stations) are staffed either by those who rebelled against authority while in college (during Vietnam) or were taught/raised/indoctrinated (as much as I don’t want to use the last word it’s sadly true) by those original individuals. It doesn’t offend. I told those who asked me back in 2011 that with a full withdrawal designed to pander to political constituents without a Status of Forces Agreement and with the beginning of the Arab Spring, things were going to go horribly wrong in Iraq within a few years.
I’d never heard of Thanksgiving Point before. It’s actually pretty cool that your school had field trips for the kids that did really well. I think its two different places though. There’s a Dinosaur, Colorado right on the border with Utah on Route 40 near Jensen. Google Maps was giving me a hard time about loading so it took forever to find it. Lots of fossils, some camping, my dad offered it as a suggestion as a possible place to go.
Sounds like one of these days I should probably get out to Salt Lake City then. From your description it seems like there are some pretty neat things to see.
Thanks for the info and advice on Zion, autumn is my favorite season so that would be a lot of fun. Have a great weekend.

Your welcome. I just really hope I didn't come off as rude. Its just been in my experience out here in my generation most of your liberals tend to be liberal for the sake of rebellion like you stated and don't even know why they are liberal. All sides have both good and bad idea's. Its just sad if you ever get a chance to talk to someone out here in Utah who is liberal and in college typically most of them don't even know what it means to be liberal except for gay rights. Its rather sad. I wish people would more or so research before hopping into something. I try my best. I've even changed my mind on things but then people call you a fence sitter. I always though the best way to be was to educate yourself and admit short-comings and admit when someone else maybe right.
Yeah I'm really bummed out about Iraq and Iran. I had many friends come back before the destabilization and they were all begging to stay and saw the writing on the wall. Many had developed kinship's with the people down there giving them food and shelter supplies. Education and wonderful care packages sacrificing things they were given to give to someone who had less just for the sheer smile. It broke a lot of soldiers heart having to leave the poor and struggling behind.
As for Joanns they have a website too to give you an idea of what they have I'd say they are better than Micheal's which is more expensive. They tend to have more variety and better deals and do coupon and deals all the time. The store runs on coupons and advertising. www.joann.com/ A lot of guys come in there too now for things they need, some of the tools they get there or notions for restoration repairs are cheaper and better too than paying more for the same item some where else. I had a guy come in last night for marine material for his boat some leather needles and was also asking about velcro's and other notions.
I would say, art. crafts, sewing, crochet, knitting, cooking, misc, wall and framing supplies, materials, machines, and tools. There is more there to beside all of that. I know a lot of students come in for craft and art supplies out here its the only thing they have for some of the photography stuff without having to drive into Salt Lake. They don't sell camera's or film but do have a great selection out here on framing supplies. And the coupon discounts for custom framing orders are amazing!

You didn’t come off as rude. Most of those where I grew up were liberal because that was the how they were taught in school, that was everything in newspapers and on the news stations. It was just ubiquitous pressure and influence. Some indeed were liberal just to rebel against moderately conservative parents. Others decided to be liberal just to be hip or cool or in style/fashionable, it was contrarian to the Bush presidency. There were a few who were straight up raised in liberalism (one of my best friends, but his family is European so it is to be expected, I guess). I and my contemporaries entered our teen years as George Bush took office so it was the rebellious thing to be against him and everything he and his policies stood for. Though, I do wonder if the same would have happened (only with a conservative leaning) had we had reached adulthood during the terms of Presidents Clinton or Obama. There are some good parts to liberalism, as there are some bad parts to conservatism but moderates seem to be a dying breed in most places, replaced by far left/right wing individuals. There’s a saying, can’t remember where I heard it; “a conservative at twenty has no heart, a liberal at forty has no brain.” Education is the best way, or at least I think it is, the problem is that it is being subsumed by propaganda, and the truth is often shouted down for political points with constituencies.
I guess we’ll see what happens in the middle-east but its been a center for war and bloodshed for thousands of years. Some of the Iraqi military I worked with were good guys, doing their jobs, trying to do better. A lot, unfortunately, didn’t seem to care or worry. That’s why we probably should have done a lot more for the Kurds, they know how to get things done. But, of course, regardless of which sect of radical or even moderate Islam takes hold (or moves to the forefront of influence), it will be the everyday people in Iraq (and Iran) who suffer… as usual.
Thank you for the link. I enjoyed looking at the pet section, but, then, I love animals so not unexpected. Michael’s has gotten really expensive over the years. I remember when they had a little store, newly opened in my area (a long time ago, won’t go into details, I feel old enough already). Now, they have a massive space in my home town (where a Borders bookstore used to be) and they’ve pushed the prices up really high. I’ve always rather enjoyed craft stores, but I try to pursue a wide range of interests (have to get back into knitting before winter). Good to hear that there are a broad range of people who patronize the store. Do the men look all awkward and uncomfortable?
Also, admittedly, love using coupons. Might check and see if there’s a Joann’s in my area. What kind of cooking supplies do they have?
Hope you’re having a good week.

I totally agree with you on that. I think what happened with Bush unfortunately,
was people like eloquent speakers and think there smart and he had a hard time with speech giving. Being a good speaker
doesn't make you smart although being smart doesn't always make you a great speaker either. I think people give him to little credit. I think he did a lot of good. I also think that every president we have had has done both good and bad. No one's perfect, can't expect the to be, and I think people place to high of an expectation on things, its really hard to get things done the right way in congress from my understanding. There is a big process and it can take years for something to go through. Just like it can take years for the effects of another generation to be felt. Some times as I've studied history I've noticed things happen sometimes decades or even hundreds of years after something. Some times as a people I think we see to short sighted, and those that long long and hard I think tend to get over looked because solutions are often wanted right now and they can deal with the effects later down the road. I would think it would be easier in some cases to plan ahead and it would save the trouble, the money, and the headache.
Eh whats sad is I hate talking about politics but everyone says I'd make a good leader, I just do research I'm not well informed on most things. If I want to know I do thorough research on all angles. lol, For the most part politics bum me out. lol
Anyway were you a soldier? It sounds that way from what you mentioned in the second paragraph. And I agree its the everyday people who suffer, those who are trying to just live and survive.
The men for them most part don't seem to care. Most of the guys I have come through are either gay (is there a nicer way to put it?) and sew or draw fashion, or are older men getting thing with or without their wives for their wives. I've had some men come in for their own crafts as well, its nice to see people having fun with their spare time. One guy was excited to finish his cross-stitch, he was buying browns for a wheel barrow and hoe. I thought he was buying it for fly tying, lol. I know guys who do that. My dad makes lures from jewelry supplies, like the wedding rings. You make them so the flash like streamers in the water to attract the fish and the come into the radius and see the food on the hook and go for the hook instead. Certain beads glimmer really well in the murky water.
Cooking, I'm not so familiar with. I think its all cake decorating stuff mostly. I know its all Wilton brand stuff though. I know they have classes as well at Joann's and teach quilting, sewing, cooking, and some other stuff as well. Cheap too.
I hope that helps a bit.
Most of my cooking is experimental, I have fun with seasonings and meats mostly. I made my first pot pie.
It was beef had carrots, and celery in it. Made my own gravy stew for the filling. I looked recipes up online for hours and just didn't see anything I liked like usual and said screw it my way or the highway! Most the recipes I found were half-a**ed frozen food stuff labeled homemade. That's not homemade lol. I did my pie dough and everything by hand like I do my rolls. I don't have a fancy beater. Came out perfect the first time, I'm scared I'll never be able to do it again. I hate that to. Everything I make is never the same every time.
I'm having a good week. I am tired but I'm getting on schedule again. I got a reward my first week on the job! I got recognized in our meeting and was given a pin for sales. I think I might have this permanently!

Whew, back from camping. Mesa Verde was pretty spectacular. Pictures to follow.
Very true that people like eloquent speakers (which Bush was not, though he didn’t do a poor job when he spoke to the nation after the Columbia disaster), but that the ability to speak well doesn’t make you intelligent and that being intelligent does make you a good speaker. I think President Bush was a very good person trying to overcome failures in his past whereas President Obama is probably objectively more intelligent but unlike Bush his heart isn’t always in the right place. Funnily enough, Bush did more to help immigrants than Obama did, and Obama did more (initially) for troops (with his support of the Post 9/11 G.I. Bill). Congress does seem to be a really unfortunate quagmire or morass of bureaucracy and partisan bickering. You’re definitely right on the long-term effects of actions not being fully realized for years or decades after they are taken. Planning ahead would be really great but most people don’t seem able to go through with the idea.
Some say that the best leaders do not seek power but have it thrust upon them. Could be that way with you. Never a soldier, I was a Marine.
I don’t think you need to worry about a nicer way to put it, especially if what you’re saying is accurate. Gay men are probably a much better market for crafts and fashion than straight men. My dad was big into fly fishing and home tying when he was younger and had more spare time and income. Hopefully it makes a resurgence. I’ve done a lot of fishing both freshwater and saltwater but never went fly fishing.
Sounds like they have a lot of interesting things at Joann’s that can help them reach customers and to give them an edge over Michael’s. There might be some old pictures on my DA account of cakes that I’ve worked on. I usually do layer cakes with fruit or candy on them. They never look quite as nice as I would like. If I were ever to open a bakery the cakes would be “ugly cakes: look like hate but sure taste great” or something silly like that. How did your pot pie turn out, it sounds delicious? I’ve got a bratwurst, peppers and onions dish with wild huckleberry barbecue sauce slow cooking in my crock pot right now. I almost never make things the same either. Still trying to remember what I did the first time I made pumpkin bread because it turned out absolutely perfect. I remember my aunt getting really annoyed because my uncle ate the entire loaf I gave them in one day and she didn’t get to try any.
Congrats on doing well in your first week and on earning the pin. Have a great week and talk to you soon.

Oh God that sounds amazing!!! Fruit cakes! I like the look like hate sure are great! Anyway that is pretty funny and cool you should really think about it. Sometimes the best food isn't always pretty. I know a lot of people out here do bake sales and make more than the professional homebodies workshop down the road. She has pretty stuff but charges way to much. I've seen 6 stores in and out of just her location alone in the last 2 years or so. People try to overcharge and end up not making enough money to pay overhead on the store, but the catch 22 there is that if you don't charge enough you won't make money either.
By the way I don't think I ever caught your name we've been talking for weeks on and off. The name is Cecily! Seriously what is it about guys that know how to cook? I find that they end up being better than most women that cook or do it professionally. My friend Dustin also cooks and he's going to culinary school he wants a restaurant one day and he makes amazing barbique ribs and his Asian foods are amazing. I think its awesome and I hope he makes it one day. You could try it on a small level like an arts festival or mountain man show, you just need a booth and a food licence and val-ah!

The problem is that I don't think I would want to bake for a living, or cook for a living. A lot of people tell me I should become a chef but I think a lot of the fun and joy of cooking would disappear if I did it for work everyday, especially if I didn't have a choice and had to make the same menu items over and over again. I guess the baking might be better simply because I would have less of a fixed definite course of things to make. Don't know.
With the pricing you have to find the sweet spot of profit (there's actually a mathematical term for it, can't remember what it is) were you make the most while retaining the greatest amount of customers.
Hello Cecily, I'm Mike. A sadly mundane name I'm afraid. I could come up with a more interesting one for myself but would prefer not to misrepresent. I don't know on the cooking thing. I haven't actually met many guys that cook. Then again, I don't meet a lot of women that can cook either. Everybody is always surprised when I cook something. They think I got it pre-made from a restaurant or store. What kind of Asian foods does he make? I have a 'Complete Asian' Cookbook but have only made a few of the recipes so far. I guess I could see if there are any food events going on around here.
Have a great week.
