 A filled in grey star means the person is a premium member, whereas a star that is not filled in means the person is a beta tester.

Among other things, Premium members; get no ads while browsing, are able to change their username, get exclusive access to archived content,    
Give journals/profile more 'pop' with custom skins, get extra widgets and stats, Gain instant community privileges , Administrate more than three Groups, Access exclusive weekly giveaways, and Beta-test new site features. To name a few benefits. I honestly wouldn't get premium, however I might buy points sometime.
(Points are like the currency of Da. You can redeem them for anything in the DeviantArt Marketplace, from Premium Memberships, to Digital Resources, to Commissions, or prints of your favorite deviations.)
