I have no art planned, at all.
I've got summer tests coming up,
and I have to revise,
so I'll be too busy!

You're very welcome!
I came for the Homestuck art,
but I stayed because your Original stuff is excellent, and I love your style!

Ahhh thank you so much!
I really really appreciate that, because, you know, this is DeviantArt, and the majority of people here aren't really into original work.

KittyKatJessie In reply to Riilith [2011-04-23 12:13:51 +0000 UTC]

That is the truth! I still don't think you should concentrate less on Original work in favour of Fanart though, as I enjoy both.
I think, on this site especialy, people are more concerned with favourites and their popularity rather than the art they produce.

Riilith In reply to KittyKatJessie [2011-04-23 17:48:26 +0000 UTC]

I have to agree. That's why, when I upload anything, it's either my favorite original work or fanart, because I know if it's anything else it won't get any attention anyway.
I think it's alright, though, that popularity is so important here, because I don't think DeviantArt was ever a very serious website anyway. What's more important is how you approach your art outside of DeviantArt.

I suppose when it's your favourite artwork and you see all the faves and positive comments it gets,
it must be really rewarding!
I was under the illusion for a while that dA, and the people who use it, were very serious about art,
but when you see the vast amount of people with undesirable personalities on here, art theft, flame wars and disrespecting people only because of the fandom they're in, it makes me wonder.
Whoops, ranting!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Riilith In reply to KittyKatJessie [2011-04-23 18:47:44 +0000 UTC]

x2 rant combo!

Yeah, it's fun to see great artists get popular on here. I think it's a good forum to use to put yourself out there on the internet (because there are much worse art-related websites out there that you could go to) as long as you don't take it too seriously.
It's when people either start trying too hard to become popular, or think they and their DeviantArt fame are serious business that it causes trouble. I feel like the majority of the people here aren't like that, but you know... there are always some bad eggs.

Wow gosh sorry for getting my rant all over your page! How did that even happen?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KittyKatJessie In reply to Riilith [2011-04-23 18:55:06 +0000 UTC]

Aww, no it's alright!
It's good knowing someone else shares my opinions!
Also I find that some of the best artists have the worst personalities and think they're somehow higher up than their watchers/fans,
so it's good to know that not everyone is big headed, and can hold a conversation without being to busy to reply!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Riilith In reply to KittyKatJessie [2011-04-23 19:06:34 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I feel the same way.
On one hand, it's understandable that they're busy, and obviously they can't always talk to everyone individually if they're really popular. But then, there are the artists who are just either the quiet type or busy, and then there are the ones who don't seem to appreciate the fame at all or think that having the most page views makes them above everyone else.
I think the worst is when they get a critique from someone and then pitch a fit about it, especially if they asked for it. I don't understand that at all! If someone gives you a critique, that means they genuinely want you to and believe that you can improve. When is that ever a bad thing?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KittyKatJessie In reply to Riilith [2011-04-23 19:33:22 +0000 UTC]

I understand that artists may not have the time to thank everybody personally for faves/watches etc, but it wouldn't take that much time to make a journal every now and then. It's not that watchers need personal thanks, but it'd be nice to know that all the watches/faves haven't gone to your head and you still recognise how and who got you the recognition.
The critique matter, I've seen so many similar situations.
It's as if they ask for to critique expecting to get no replies, or very few pointing out things that they themselves have already noticed.
Also there are a lot of artists accepting request due to lack of inspiration,
but ask them to do something and, most of the time what I've gotten is
"I don't do Original Art" (Personally I feel it's because they won't get enough faves for their work).
Sorry for the tl;dr!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Riilith In reply to KittyKatJessie [2011-04-23 19:41:26 +0000 UTC]

Oh no problem!
I agree. As long as they seem generally thankful for the faves and watches, then it's fine. But if they just don't acknowledge when they receive a rush of watchers or something, it's kind of disappointing.
Aughhh the "requests" situation. If you don't want to do original art, either say so upfront, or don't offer to do requests. There are also times when they offer to do request and then just... don't ever do them. It's okay if they suddenly become busy and they let everyone know if something comes up, but if they knew they would be busy beforehand or just decided not to do them, why would they offer to take requests in the first place?

KittyKatJessie In reply to Riilith [2011-04-23 20:06:38 +0000 UTC]

Gosh, this is like an essay on "Most Common Problems With Artists On Da"
It really bothers me when you comment on a picture complimenting the artist, and they ignore it in favour of arguing with someone who insulted/critiqued their work.
Also, while I don't have any, I see people requesting OCs and get turned down again. I'd say the artist refuses to do them because they won't get enough faves.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Riilith In reply to KittyKatJessie [2011-04-23 20:19:25 +0000 UTC]

Haha.

Ugh, that's always irritating. Why even bother arguing with someone who deliberately insults you? Saying "if you don't like it, don't look at it" has never really kept rude people from commenting on something they don't like. It feels like some popular artists feel a compulsive need to defend their fame, like a few negative comments will make all their fans think they're not a good artist anymore.
And I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case, which kind of defeats the whole purpose of doing requests.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KittyKatJessie In reply to Riilith [2011-04-24 18:02:35 +0000 UTC]

Sometimes I think people post rude comments just to provoke the artist,
but they should just ignore them and focus on the positive ones instead.
I feel though that artists are under a lot of pressure,
they're submitting their work for other just to scrutinise it and focus on the faults.
Comments like "X looks like a man", "X doesn't look like they're supposed to" must be very disheartening.
(On that subject, nearly every artist I watch has at one point had to defend their head-canon from negative comments)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Riilith In reply to KittyKatJessie [2011-04-25 03:47:28 +0000 UTC]

They probably do! And if that's the case, the best thing to do is ignore them anyway.
I have to agree. I'm not nearly popular enough for anyone to care about that stuff in my gallery, but if I was in that situation I can imagine it'd be pretty upsetting. There's a difference between constructive criticism and "you're doing everything wrong, stop drawing." If someone (or worse, a group of people) is insistent that your art is terrible, eventually you're going to start believing it, and it's always sad when a great artist or someone with a lot of potential to become a great artist gives up on art.

KittyKatJessie In reply to Riilith [2011-04-28 20:04:48 +0000 UTC]

I don't understand why people need to insult other peoples thoughts on certain characters.
I mean, taking the HS fandom for example, Andrews designs for the characters don't set anything in stone, so who's to say that "X doesn't look like that" etc.
I also find it funny when people get so offended at fan trolls and the quality of them. Yes, some of them are unimaginative and poor in quality to say the least, but that doesnt mean that by default they all are.
And then people get so upset/angry when people focus on their fantrolls instead of producing art of the actual canon characters.
(Do you have a Tumblr? If you do, I'm pretty sure you'll know the group of people that make fantrolls I'm talking about!) I mean, it's not like the artists are obliged to make art of one particular thing. (And, if I'm being honest, I find some of their characters have more personality than canon characters.)

Riilith In reply to KittyKatJessie [2011-04-28 22:45:22 +0000 UTC]

I don't really understand the hate for fan trolls in general! I've never seen a fan character paired up with a cannon character, which is usually why people don't like fan characters. Plus, from what I've seen, most of the time they don't interact with cannon characters at all, so it's not like they're always trying to insert their fan characters into the cannon story line. I completely understand when people think they're silly, because a lot of them are, but who cares? Fan trolls, fan adventures, and all that kind of stuff are just ways for some people to have fun and it seems like most of the fan troll creators don't take them too seriously anyway, so why should do people get mad about it?
(And even if a fan character DID interact with cannon characters, what does it matter? That happens in every fandom, and if that alone makes someone unable to enjoy the rest of the fandom or homestuck in general, then they probably shouldn't be involved in fandom in the first place!)
I don't really use or log on to my tumblr, but I lurk in tumblr a lot so I think I know generally who you're talking about. None of the fan trolls have really caught my eye, so I guess they're not my thing? But don't dislike them, either.

KittyKatJessie In reply to Riilith [2011-04-30 14:22:29 +0000 UTC]

Recently enough I came across the first picture I've seen with a fan troll and cannon character interacting,
and personally it didn't bother me. I mean, the trolls we're shown aren't the only ones,
so who's to say that it couldn't be a possibility?
The majority of the time though, they're either interacting or talking with other fan trolls.
I don't see why people get so angered by them though,
because that's just the way a fan gets enjoyment out of something they like, and is that really all that bad?
If they don't like it, the should just ignore it instead of labeling the whole fandom as "the worst fandom" when it's far better than any others I've been in!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Riilith In reply to KittyKatJessie [2011-05-02 02:23:34 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, exactly! I've actually never really had a problem with fan characters in general, even "Mary Sues," because really, if that's how someone has fun with a show or comic they enjoy, then I'm not about to get upset about it. Obviously some people go way overboard with fan characters (not in this fandom, but in others), but it's not like it makes the show or comic any less enjoyable.
Besides, stories involving fan characters can be pretty interesting when they explore the rules Hussie set up for SBURB, and different ways the game could be played. There are a lot of really intelligently written stories behind some fan characters and adventures.
And yeah, there are DEFINITELY worse fandoms out there. I don't get it when people say that Homestuck has the worst fandom because there are tons of other fandoms that do all the "bad" stuff that the Homsestuck fandom does, only in larger quantities.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KittyKatJessie In reply to Riilith [2011-05-07 16:56:04 +0000 UTC]

Gosh, sorry about the late reply!
I usually find that with fan characters,
they're mostly one extreme or the other:
too average/intentionally relatable or unbelievable.
Also, people when making Fan characters tend to make them
completely different to the characters in the actual show/comic etc
so that they're not criticised for being direct copies.
I think some fan adventures are actually beneficial because they
elaborate on the rules for Sburb and, made me anyway,
reconsider all the possibilities for the game.
I think in every fandom there's going to be bits that certain people disagree with,
but in this fandom people seem far more mature when dealing with things they dislike,
e.g. when the see a pairing they don't like, they don't flame or criticize the person who ships that pairing.
