Well this is the basic idea.

What you do is you have 2 sides, the townies and the Mafia.

The townies win by killing all the mafia and they don't know ANYONE's role but their own.

Mafia know their partners in crime so they can plan on who to kill.

There's 2 phases. Day and Night phase.

During the day phase everyone talks(Just like a regular chatroom.) about who is Mafia and who is the person they want to lynch. The Mafia blend need to blend in and cause as much disorder and paranoia without getting discovered. Throughout the day phase players will vote to lynch someone, at the end of the day phase that player is killed and their role is revealed to everyone else.

Then during the night phase the Mafia players discuss amongst themselves who they want to kill. They can kill anyone they choose. During the night phase there is NO POSTING.

Once the night phase ends the killed player is revealed to everyone else.

Then the game repeats until someone is a winner. There's additional roles you can add like people who can protect someone from a mafia attack, learn the identity of others, all that cool shit. It's actually really fun.
