on Leave Your Shoes Outside. Genkan are traditional Japanese entryway areas for a house, apartment, or buildingβ€”something of a combination of a porch and a doormat. The primary function of genkan is for the removal of shoes before entering the main part of the house or building. Genkan are often recessed into the floor, to contain any dirt that is tracked in from the outside (as in a mud room). The tiled or concrete genkan floor is called tataki. Upon entry, shoes are usually turned to face the door so they can be slipped on easily when leaving or placed into a getabako. After removing shoes, one must avoid stepping in the genkan in socks or with bare feet, to avoid bringing dirt into the house. Once inside, generally one will change into slippers, or shoes intended for indoor wear (Uwabaki). [link]

Red Temple in Nikko Forest. Shrines and Temples of Nikkō encompasses 103 buildings or structures and the natural setting around them. It is one of the most beautiful areas in Japan. The buildings belong to two Shinto shrines and one Buddhist temple. Nine of the structures are designated National Treasures of Japan while the remaining 94 are Important Cultural Properties. [link]

Japanese Demon Origami. I visited the Japanese American Museum in Little Tokyo and found an extensive origami exhibit. I was able to take one photograph before the docent told me to put away my camera. I should have taken my pocket camera like everyone did. There were insect origami, wedding gown origami, even a T-Rex skeleton. I highly recommend it. An SLR is very difficult to hide. [link] [link] origami and [link] my Japanese gallery

Twenty angels are IN your world. Ten of them are sleeping, nine are playing, One is reading this message. Send this to ten friends including me if I don't get it back then I guess I'm not one of them... as soon as you get five replies someone you love will quietly surprise you..

on A Perfect Little Garden. Until this century, traditional gardens in Japan were closed to the public. They were built by the ruling elite and by monasteries as places for peaceful contemplation and worship, they provided refuge from the strife that marked much of Japan's history. The gardens symbolized utopia. [link]

on Lady with the Purple Parasol. The parasol dancers wear brightly colored kimonos and wooden shoes. Girls move around in shuffling steps to a Mikado song (one in 4/4 time). Counting during the dance is generally done in twos for one measure and in four for two measures. A parasol dancer may dance alone or in a group of four. The dance starts with the parasol opened and held over the head, with the dancer's hands at chest level. As the dance progresses, the parasol is moved about. [link] Video [link] Link to photo

on Harmony Smile Courage. The Chinese roots of Japanese calligraphy go back to the twenty-eighth century BCE, to a time when pictographs were inscribed on bone for religious purposes. When this writing developed into an instrument of administration for the state, the need for a uniform script was felt and Li Si, prime minister in the Chinese dynasty of Qin, standardized a script and its way of being written. He sanctioned a form of script based on squares of uniform size into which all characters could be written from eight strokes. He also devised rules of composition where horizontal strokes are written first and characters are composed starting from top to bottom, left to right. [link]

The Bridge and the Teahouse. When I downloaded the Japanese garden photoshoot onto my computer, I was stunned at how this one came out. Some people said it looks unreal and I have to agree. The tranquility makes the viewers step outside of thier busy comfort zone and transports them to their soul's center of serenity. [link]
