Alan's knees :
"dau goi cua anh Alan"
It is depending if Alan is more older of you.
(in this case, i suppose he is more older like you and you know him already, also i have used the pre name : anh = anh Alan).
In vietnamese, we use so many possiblities about the age, this element is so important and determinate the words you will use to respect the person and your own position about this person. It is for this reason the first thing we ask when we meet a man or a woman is :
how old are you ?
- If you don't know absolutely this person, you will use the pre name for him : anh, exceptly if really he is more younger or really more more older like you....(see the following different situations..)
- If the person is more younger like you (10 years or more), you will use the pre name : chau (nephew) and bac for you.
- If you don't want down the person, you will use : em (young brother)
- If the person is quite the same age, you use anh (big brother) and chi (big sister) for you or if you prefer stay neutral like in a professional situation, you can use only the firstname : Alan and your firstname for you.
- If the person is more older like you, you will use the pre name anh for him, em for you.
- If the person is really more older like you (10 years or more) you will use the pre name : bac (oncle) and Nephew for you.
- If the person is very old (80 years or more) you will use the pre name : ong (Mister) and the pre name nephew for you.
- If the person is really unkown for you, and you want keep the unkown between you and him, you will use the pre name ong Mister)
Depending of the age, the difference and the position of Alan about you and the respect you want give him or not.....
Not easy ins't it ?
