Why indeed I am. I have been quite occupied lately, so I am not able to be as active as I would like to be. I hope that changes as time progresses, but I will do the best I can.

Andr-Sar [2009-07-27 08:07:12 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for the kind and emotive words about my truly modest artworks.

As for you, from my deepest experience in visual art science, I can recomend to learn a pencil drawing first before you proceed to cg painting. Every real artwork consists from several layers of ideas, basically which are:

- story (main idea - what an image will radiate to the viewer and why),
- design (what forms and shapes will help you to materialize your idea, to bring it from the world of abstraction to the world of matter),
- composition (how the various elements (forms) should interact with each other (placement, point of view, lighting and color) in order to provide the dynamic of the story).

So, we have the theory of art as an intergral process of materializing inner (spiritual, emotional) energy to what we can touch and interact with (matter). If someone wants to learn to create a deep and interesting piece of admiration, he\she first has to learn to THINK and IMAGINATE. Techniques are easily achieved when you know what exactly you are going to paint. Masters spend 80% of the time not trying to figure out how they will do that and that but trying to imaginate something unique and emotionally breathtaking to cover. They grab tons of references, meditate hours of observations, test hundreds of sketches until they find the gold mine.

Early I've suggested the pencil drawing and that is because it allows you to study the elements of you work quickly, to handle with portraying of complex forms, such as human body or various nature objects. Also it allows you to understand how to composite them and construct the story, how the light dynamics is functioning.

So practise and you will inevitably become a master. Live with bright emotions!

It was my pleasure Andr-Sar. I deeply appreciate the time you took into advising me with art. Thank you.

I will keep your words of wisdom at heart and try my best to be positive and imaginative. I hope in my future pieces the story that I'm trying to portray, as well as the emotions that I would like people to feel, will come through.

Thanks again for your kind words.

Hi. Thought I drop by your gallery and have a look too. Looks like you do quite a lot of pencil work and recently some digital stuff. Some quick advice I can offer, if you want some, are:
-for pencil: bring up more contrast (shade harder in the shadow, and lighter in the bright areas)... maybe you could try out some cross-hatching too, those bring nice sharp textures to picture.
-for CG: personally I'm a minimalist when it comes to using tools in CG painting. I think the most of pattern etc tools in Photoshop are shortcuts that shows. Using less tool (i.e. just a plain ol' paint brush) will make ur pic more natural and professional.

Keep it up!

Thank you for the advice! I've officially switched to digital art, but I appreciate the help with pencil drawings. In my first two digital drawings I did indeed use Photoshop's handy shortcuts quite a bit. I was just beginning to learn and thus I wanted to use what I found. In my third and fourth digital piece I didn't really use the shortcuts. I didn't paint all of the rock/stone detail with a brush, but I did with the rest.

Again I appreciate the help and I will most certainly remember it for the future. Thanks again!
