How delicious is it to wander around, looking for nothing in particular, and end up back in places you'd loved being before

Oi, write some more poetry already. I know MRT's offices and our house isn't as inspiring as Venice, but it's all too 2006-heavy on here. I liked very much the translation, but then I can't really judge it because I don't understand the crazy moon language the original is written in.

Sorry to have ignored this, and for the fact that I'm still not about to start writing. But I thought it was time I stopped being inscrutable, at least.

I never replied to this, idiot that I am. And I was in Manchester only a month ago. Are you still there? How is it? I hear it's dismal but fiercely exciting.

Fulham 1 - 0 Liverpool

now I bet you're happy with that!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LazyLinePainterJohn In reply to selfishlyconscious [2007-05-15 03:39:47 +0000 UTC]

I watched that in a pub, by myself, with the sound off, to the dulcet beats and moans of R'n'B shite - a surreal experience. I thought we were going to lose right up to the final whistle. I'm so disenchanted with the team, though, and I don't think Sanchez is the answer by any stretch of the imagination.

In other news, Boro 3 - FFC 1. Guess that's bragging rights to you for another season. My mum was there, for some reason. She was going by coach, so I'm not sure she'll have made it home yet.

Thank you kindly for the . The Essential Kierkegaard is excellent for what it is; I really enjoyed it, and I think the editors did a nice job (remarkably).

Stay away from Marquez, though. That's almost as bad as Borges.

LazyLinePainterJohn In reply to GeneratingHype [2007-06-29 19:20:07 +0000 UTC]

The Essential... does seem to be for theology students, but it did its job. And Marquez stole days of my life in much the same way Borges does, and put me off writing for weeks. So maybe I should stay away from them.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GeneratingHype In reply to LazyLinePainterJohn [2007-06-29 21:28:58 +0000 UTC]

Borges is the better of the two, but yes: if you want to write, they are probably not the way to go. If you want to read, though--oh, the beauty! (It's wonderful to find a real reader on here; thank you for the response.)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LazyLinePainterJohn In reply to GeneratingHype [2007-06-30 03:09:16 +0000 UTC]

The beauty indeed! Borges is so perfect he makes my nose swell up and my teeth move about. My horrible attempt at Borgesian form is probably still in my scraps somewhere. In fact, so is this - [link] - which you might get a kick out of.

I know I should be commenting on your excellent work. If I remain gainfully unemployed, I shall make it a priority.

Have you ever read The Unbearable Lightness of Being? It's by Kundera. If you haven't, you might enjoy it.

Don't worry about making it over to my deviations; I have been rather lazy of late (and it might be a stretch to call them excellent ).

LazyLinePainterJohn In reply to GeneratingHype [2007-06-30 03:27:58 +0000 UTC]

One of my all-time favourites, I'm happy to say. At one point, four people in my existentialism class were reading that book. It's not even mentioned in the course, but it did give me a new angle on Nietzsche. I've just finished a Kinky Friedman, 'Spanking Watson', which is a rather different kettle of proverbials, but good for a laugh.

Thank you! Sorry this is so late a reply, I do appreciate the fandom. I'm in semi-retirement, I'm afraid, so your faith in DA may have to go back on hiatus. Unless you check out the icon directly below this one, because Ms. Nostalgia-Of-Mud is one of the best poets anywhere. You'll love her. Tell her I said hi.

NostalgiaOfMud [2007-03-24 06:59:07 +0000 UTC]

Dear John - I can't tell you how much your appreciation means (without getting damned soppy and girly). I fling this stuff into the oblivion that is Devart (God knows why) and people look but no-one says anything (so I'm thinking this must be shite, they can't even cough politely before exiting) and then along comes John - hurrah!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LazyLinePainterJohn In reply to NostalgiaOfMud [2007-03-27 19:19:40 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome. Here's another one:

People always say to me... well, they sometimes say to me... well, some randomer once said, that I was their favourite poet. And I hated that, because I know I'm okay, but I also know that there's several million better. I watch many of them.

So bear in mind, I don't say things like that lightly. With the situation thus made clear, let me tell you that after John Whitworth, you're probably my favourite contemporary poet. Please don't stop.

I keep meaning to ask you, how is MissWetTShirt?

I left the Wet one behind in Crete about 2 years ago. She was living on a diet of retsina ('retina remover' in her own words) and baclava and was very happy. I am due to visit her this summer. I shall of course give her your regards.

I'm getting on okay. Putting my head down and getting this degree, for the most part, hence my near-total inactivity. I've lost any will to write for its own sake, but I'm not lamenting the fact.

How are you?
