I used to use Pencil 2D which is free!
Now I just use firealpaca in onionskin mode!

how do you animate on firealpaca? I'm looking at pics of it, but I don't see any places where the frames would go.

The layers are the frames! You need to go into the View tap and click union skin mode, and then to preview the animation you can click the autoplay button! Then in Files you can export the layers when ur done!
