My name is Brittanie Jones, and I am in love with art. I’ve wanted to go to FIT since I first started looking into colleges. When I was first born, my mother had to stay in the hospital for about three months. Because of this, I had to live with my great aunt. My aunt is a very interesting older lady. She spent a lot of time and effort on instilling a sense of beauty and creativity in my life. In the time between my birth and the beginning of elementary school, she gave me all matters of crafts and crayons and paper to get out even the weirdest little scribbles from my head. My aunt took me to Roberson, our local museum, every chance she got. I stayed with my leaning towards the arts all through my elementary and secondary schooling, and in tenth grade I found my passion in photography, when I enrolled in my first black and white 35mm course. The school I was attending at the time was rural, and had this beautiful creek that ran through a pine forest behind it. I started out taking pictures of anything I thought was pretty, not really trying to put any meaning behind it, because I really didn’t know how anything worked. My first pictures are littered with flaws, and there were about three rolls of film that I ruined and moped over because I couldn’t figure out how the chemicals worked. After a half year of taking the course, I started getting the hang of things, my pictures becoming more well planned and thought out, and with more thought and focus to the compositional and technical aspects. Unfortunately, I have had terrible luck in the past two years entering contests. It’s only during this, my senior year that I’ve actually gotten to have anything in a show or contest. Recently, I won second place in a competition in the Cooperative Gallery in Binghamton, NY in the category of media arts, and first place in the high school-wide category of photography in the Reflections Program competition. Photography is my passion.
My goal is to become a working professional; therefore my greatest interest in FIT is its major driven curriculum and its internship programs. The size and draw of the city is of great interest to me, also the potential for meaningful and interesting photographs to add to my portfolio.

Brittanie Jones Period 3

Collectivization

Collectivization, as a plan, began with the confiscation and merging of the privately owned farmland of the Kulaks. The original idea of this, or the idea put forth by Stalin was that if peasants were allowed to own their own farmland, there would always be some more prosperous then the others, therefore creating class division. Also, Stalin used this collectivization as part of his five year plans, to make enough money through trading grain to push the country into the industrial age at a rapid rate. However, the collectivization of the farmland in Ukraine was harsh, due to the extensive opposition to the plan in that area. This should’ve been expected, as Ukraine has a history of fierce nationality and martial ways. By 1931, however, no rebellion remained left in the people, the Party had broken it. Even so, grain quotas were not met. Much of the grain was wasted, and people were just beginning to feel the signs of a coming famine. Only 250 lbs of grain per person was left, and by no means was that available to the 31 million in the Ukraine.
After all the farmlands were merged, everyone was expected to work on this land equally, planting, caring for, and harvesting the grain to be distributed and shipped to different areas by the government. Very little was left for the actual workers, and by November in 1932 there was nothing left for them. They couldn’t meet quotas, and therefore they were isolated on their farmlands, starving to death because Stalin thought they had more then they did.
Aside from the grain situation, animals that were supposed to become government property were killed by their owners, leaving the population decimated. Therefore, not only did the people have no grain, but no meat was available to them either.
To keep people on the farms and working, communist loyal overseers fenced in farmland and were stationed in watch towers. Those deemed to be disloyal or unfit workers were shot, human life in this era was cheap. Mercy was not allowed to their overseers either, for any leniency amongst them would surely lead them to the same fate.

A reoccurring theme one can see in Marxist Leninism is the presence of professional revolutionaries. A small group of people that lead the people, guide, direct, and basically rule. This idea in itself is quite contrary to what Marx believed, as he wanted the proletariat to rise up together en masse and have a world-wide, violent, revolution. The way Lenin attempts his revolution seems to not only contribute to a revolution different from the one in the communist manifesto, but something that seems to equate more to a centralized sort of tyranny. Of course, this idea of a small group of leading revolutionaries dates back to the French revolution, and shows up again in early Russian Jacobinism. This is referring to, instead of a professional revolutionary, a revolutionary minority, who doesn’t necessarily count on the active participation of the people. This fits in nicely with Lenin’s ideals, he kills people who don’t agree with him, or who stand out and speak up against the revolution, or counter - revolutionaries.
No revolutionary movement can be durable without a stable organization, and this organization must be formed of only professional revolutionaries. This way, the focus is not divided amongst other pursuits. This seems more like it would add to the conflict and class struggle. That’s probably why it didn’t last. It makes sense that you’d need a different group of people organizing the revolution though, because if all the workers had enough time to think about how they were going to organize together on their own, they wouldn’t be thinking very much about their jobs and the economy would collapse before they formed a cohesive group to strike against any ruling parties. Lenin was hypocritical about how Marxism was being reformed and changed to suit the current situation. He didn’t want anyone else to bend the professional revolutionary’s ideas to suit themselves, but for his purposes it was a-okay to add and subtract from the manifesto’s principals as he saw fit. In short, Marxist-Leninism was basically the evolution of Marx’s ideas by Lenin, to suit his own purpose and task of setting fire to the revolution and setting up a new rule in Russia.

Hmf. I think I might update when I get home if I can connect to the internet. I have soooo much art crap that I have been doing, but putting my stuff online just hasn't been a top priority this year. I should also probably update SMUT, but that would take some inspiration AND motivation, which, we all know, is something I lack extremely. And I'm not quite sure how I'll be getting home tonight. Maybe I can persuede someone to walk with me. But prolly not. lol XD The bell is going to ring for my next class soon, but I just love typing. And I want y'all to know that I'm not dead, or terminally ill ^_^

Much love!
