Uncanny ValleyPeople talk about "uncanny valley" a lot. Especially in regards to why we find some things frightening, when they are -simple and slight- variants on what could be human. I see debate on what does and does not qualify, and even some theories on why such things evoke the responses they do, but not a lot of discussion as to the different ways things can fit into the category, and what implications it has concerning conclusions that can be drawn from that discussion about our nature -or even our history- as human beings.
To define "uncanny valley", the standard definitions will all follow the same general idea. That when something looks almost human, but there is something just subtly off about it, it often provokes feelings of distrust, disgust or terror. For something to qualify, it has to fall into a very narrow range, between being very relatable because it's almost human, and actually being completely human. I was coming back from a flea market with my son and we went home by train. He sat with me humming while holding a toy he bought there, and I just chuckled to myself, thinking it was cute. We rode until we got to the station, and as we were going through the area where the passengers purchased tickets, something odd happened. While I walked by, my son was taken from me. I donβt know what had taken him, but it terrified me. It was a short dark man, like a goblin or a grey alien. His eyes looked all blue, like he was blind, but I knew he could see. His skin was dark blackish purple and shriveled. It started to run off with my son, but I ran after him. I chased him to a dead end, but he ran right through the wall, and for some reason, I did as well.
I continued following him down a tunnel that looked like it would belong to the station itself, but as I was running down the hallway, it kept getting darker. It'd gotten so dark that I had to use a sp
