Widdershins-Works In reply to LynxSphinx [2015-01-07 23:56:04 +0000 UTC]

It did help at time, mostly to learn how to draw depth without me personally focus on it in 2d works that easily. My old works before that were pale and absolutely without any depth - looking back they are so horrible
I not using greyscale now as I love playing with colours - often during the wip stage the colour game helps me greatly to change the initial concept to something better.
My eyes the same but I know how to work with it now - funny as an artist if I can call myself that having sight issues but nothing I cant work with so nothing to worry.

And thank you!
There was a time I wanted to give up as felt I "stuck" and cant get from 1 to 2 but once found a different approach it helped. It also helped that I started to kick out of my box, and try to draw uncomfortable topics which I knew I am bad with. Recently I am working on compositions and full illustrations as I am weak with backgrounds and bad with compose full illustrations been for too long a character focused artist and time to change that!
I am glad you enjoy the Tarot one this much, that was something which came to me very naturally as "whole" so I had from beginning idea of the background and the character and how to fit the together which surely an improvement as 1 year ago this would have been hard to put together. But now I getting more the whole composition and full illustrations

I was so happy as well to find your gallery because I really love the atmosphere you have in your works! I seen the knight enchanter OC commission first but on tumbrl a while ago, so was happy to find your dA. That one had strong atmosphere for sue and very good angle - and also love a lot the composition the one with the kiss with Solas, with that background that is one excellent piece of work - good colours, good "camera view" if I can say that way, you really have a good way to set up angles.

Cant wait to see what you will draw next!

Ahhh that´s good to hear ö__ö! As long as you can work with them everything should be fine right .

I feel you! I also wanted to just give up not long ago and it´s funny because I also had big problems planning a "full" image and I found out
my main problem was... I had no clue about perspective XD. So I just practiced it and now I would say I´m pretty confident but still need to
learn a lot more about composition, or let´s say try out what works best for me. And yea, we always have to challenge ourselves to get better
!

What I do now is I draw a rough sketch and when I think the overall idea is good I create a "3d" grid in ps using a vanishing point brush ö.ö.
And it really helps me to think more in these "perspective boxes"; maybe this can help you too?

Thank you so much, The atmosphere and emotions are something that comes so naturally for me and I´m pretty glad I found my "direction" when it comes to the theme I want to draw.

I plan to practice a bit more now and come up with 2 OCs, might take me a some time and I also allowed myself a few days break now since I
finished all commissions, hooray (it was... a good experience and I´m happy I got orders but it´s also really exhausting if you have to come up
with a new idea so fast and give your best with every piece ö.ö).

Say... do you speak german too? Just an assumption.
I hope this sounds not too weird and I already asked 2 other people I know from tumblr... what do you think about being "art friends" like,
because it´s always easier to see mistakes from other works it can be really helpful to get another view on your own piece? and some tips ect?

We just send each other our sketches or WIPs we need some help or just can´t figure out why it looks wrong. It´s completely stress free just
once in a while and it´s actually useful crisitm haha not "ohh it looks so good" YOU KNWO WHAT I MEAN?
I completely understand if this is too much haha I´m very open to online art contacts since I hardly know any in rl and stay most of the time at
home because... draawing .

Widdershins-Works In reply to LynxSphinx [2015-01-08 01:24:48 +0000 UTC]

Oh I am not yet the perspective part but that will be my next step - right now I am good if I can make my figures fit properly in the environment + more practice on backgrounds overall which I still need to rely too much on references which I want to change and be able to work with minimal reference for them. Like that I should not use reference for each element like I still feel like I do for study their nature but be more natural when it comes to draw water, ground, rock, dirt, windy elements, tree barks, leaves.. etc
But I am on a good way for it, some of my commissions supporting me to do push myself with it and that makes result

Hmm I must see this 3D grid brush option in PS I think I never used it before - but sounds very curious!

Commissions great help to improve since there you must draw other peoples view so naturally kicking out of your personal comfort zone so it helps you discover things you normally may not drawing things you love and more familiar with!

Sadly I dont speak German but what you ask is a curious idea since that would help me greatly as well in my progressing - more eyes see more and once you sit too long over an art it washes together and you just cant find mistakes in them anymore.
I would say I would be up for it! Especially that even if we may not speak too well English we always can give helping redlines on wips to show better what we mean - and visual explanation often helps more then words.
When I joined to dA I always wanted to get others opinion but never had the chance as people too busy with their own galleries - or I met with many dramas here and there so I got a bit discouraged but not closed from the idea!

So I say, give it a try! Would be fun and very helpful for each other

LynxSphinx In reply to Widdershins-Works [2015-01-08 01:42:27 +0000 UTC]

Ohh the thing with the grid is something I create myself with the brushes !

and EHHHHH I also had a hard time getting away from references... sometimes I just wasted my time searching for the "right" reference instead of just drawing Ö___ö... now I paint more from imagination and use photo studies for relaxation in between XD.

Yea it should be fine with the language, and we can just use very simple words when we have to describe something right ?
This is true about commission work, I also joined art trades and exchanges to be prepared for it; and to be able to draw different ideas was the exact reason I opened them.

oOhhh... I think DA here is great for sharing your works but.. maybe not the best for useful critism XD. And like you said, a lot of artists are busy themselves and... I personally have the feeling it´s more about to "show off"... so I also understand when people say they don´t have time or simply don´t want to and that´s alright. I personally prefer personal contact when it comes to criticism, you can speak your mind freely and we know each others "level" you know.. I mean if a TOTAL beginner want to give me advice I can´t take it serious?!

Yea we just help each other out when we are "blind" for our own painting XD. Do you have skype too or we can just send it here via notes. so, I have to go to bed now but you can contact me anytime !! and I´ll just send you something too when I´m stuck ^^. I´m really glad you want to give it a try.

Widdershins-Works In reply to LynxSphinx [2015-01-08 02:02:07 +0000 UTC]

Oh! You must explain me that then how you do it

I know! I still rely but only for background elements mostly the textures to understand (how to make a lake feel like water, what makes the tree feel like rough tree .. etc)
If I stuck with something badly then try first ask help from those very few friend of mine who I know drawing as hobby as well - or try to drag along family members to pose for me a bit and make real 3D study of the part I stuck with. Must say my family hates when I do that

I think so that could work nicely! I am sure language between creative individual cant be hard, what they cant say they always can draw!
Oh in free times I love doing trades as well - relaxing thing to do and that also helps me to get out art blocks which I get if my own concepts doesnt want to come along the way I would love to, then jump on a trade which I know I do for fun not stressing as it is for money and give a break. It usually works

dA is not the community I hoped it will be - I gained many friends here I still in touch with, but it not really helped me with my works the way I was hoping when joined it would. The critique option a nice feature but hardly used well, most people who use are flattering the author mostly instead of give useful word of the where to improve part.
And I can feel you there. A total beginner is good to point out obvious mistakes you just accidentally look over but for really useful more deep crit I would also would feel a bit wary about. Someone with a decent level who also seeking improving all the time is a good outsider view when it comes to your own works. I also appreciate if I not feel mistake in my wip or sketch but just to ask how others feel about, maybe they have something I not even notice or I see differently and that making my work go more smooth as I am always open for ideas. Even if it will make the current work harder - but you only can improve if you think big, big things make the real changes, the small ones not always pointing out the root of where you making the mistake.

I have skype yes! I can add you if you give me your skype nick - easier over skype the image sharing as well then through notes imo.
