Ahhh yes ive had that issue before as well. typically i take the image i want to use and resize it to the smallest size i can get it in photoshop while i make sure its still large enough. When i get the image the approximate size i generally then crop it down to the 50x50 size and upload it from there.
A quicky simple tutorial on resizing and cropping might have some images or examples for you to look at for sure. Also if you do not have any image editing software on your computer i believe there is a program called Ifranview available for free download as well..
