TF2 is a great purchase. It's one of those games though where you need lots of practice to be good at it. I can help you if you want since you'll be new at it. Or you could even ask your sister for some help since she played Team Fortress 1 with me last summer.

TF2 does require actual funds to purchase some stuff, but I might play it in the future, if you want. Then, BLOF, me, and you can go messing or something.

TF2 is still pretty enjoyable without purchasing, but in order to trade with other people, you have to make at least one purchase. The cheapest thing you can buy in the Mann Co. Store is 49 cents, so if you want to go that route, you could, and your account would be premium. I could even give you the Upgrade to Premium item, which would automatically make your account premium as well.
What are you trying to get your bro to purchase? TF2 stuff?

My sister got turned off by the "purchasing to get good items" thing. My brother was trying to purchase Garry's Mod earlier, but again, he took forever.

Is that why she never plays it? I know she enjoys Team Fortress Classic since we played it a lot last August, but I remember taking her to the MarioWiki server on TF2 last year and she didn't really like it that much.
Also, that's not necessarily the case. I mean, sure, you can buy items, but there's also item drops you can get simply from playing the game for a while. So you /could/ technically get some good items so long as you play for a little.
