I've been struggling with digital painting for the longest now,
and been wanting to draw a destroyed research laboratory landscape with rain coming in from the broken windows.

I just want to know, how do I go about doing it. I have the sketch and even the mood board, it's the painting itself that's the problem.
Any ideas?

First of, what kind of technique are gonna use for this work? Photobash or simply 100% painting digitally?

Right before i start any work, i usually play my songs with a cup of coffee at my side.Β

Firstly,i would start with a foundation which is to model out the entire environment using a 3D software to speed up the process but this step is optional if youre perspective is really reliable.

Next, I advice you to do a rough sketch or a plan on which part do you want to do first? For me, i would simply do and complete the research laboratory first including all the miscellaneous objects like beakers, microscopes & furnitures. Once you finalised everything, you can proceed on the destruction of the environment.

Lastly, you add the lightings. When it comes to lighting, it's quite complex than you might think because light bounces on anything (depends on how and rough the materials are) so include some ambient light of the room and specular light (glow look) on the objects that the light is projecting to. *If you add lighting in the early process, it would mess up your colour values.*

To summarise everything:
1.Model out the environment based on your sketches.(Optional)
2.Plan on what to do.Β
3.Deconstruct the environment.Β
4.Add lightings.
5.Look for errors/Add more polish.Β
6.Finalised everything.

------------------------------

If you happened to stumbled across some demotivation, don't worry about it. REMEMBER. It's just an excuse for your mind to stop whatever that you are doing. I suggest just keep on doing, even it's doing very little progress(in the end, it's progress, right?)
Trust me, ive experienced it.

----------------------------

Extra notes:
-Learn the rule of thirds to make your artwork more appealing and easy on the viewers' eyes.
-Every picture has always a backstory to it. Dont blindly create it.Β
-I usually imagine how the picture will turn out while im working.
-Always create an end goal whenever you start an artwork.(Eg. What will i learn after i finish it?)
-Watch some movies, videos, pictures on google or art book to get some ideas for your abandoned laboratory.

Still need some help? Just send me a note!

If you still not sure, check the link above. It gives you an idea how my process works.

Hope this covers what you are struggling on!

I'm trying to use painting, cuz i'm nervous someone will recognize where the photo is from and call me out. I know photo bashing is a thing, but it feels like a cheat to me.

Makes sense, i'll get on itΒ

Thanks for your help.

If youre nervous then how are you gonna learn and grow yourself as an artist? Be fearless. If someone does call you out, take it as a lesson and try not to recreate the same mistake.Β

Plus, It depends on how you use your resources. Most of the times and most artists including myself use pictures for only textures to create that realistic look. Dont take a picture, never altered and claimed it as yours. It's just a moronic act and straight out plagiarism.Β

I once managed to talk with one of the senior concept artist in Ubisoft and he told me, "Altered it till it doesnt look like the original." It may sounds like bad advice but it saves time.Β
