I know about the focus-issues I have. I can think up excuses, blame it on my eyes or the fact that I have no remote control to work with my camera when doing selfportraits, but that doesn't help me any further, does it? (:
It annoys me quite a bit, and hence I'm not working on any more ideas anymore until I'm able to fix these problems.
Nevertheless, thank you for your comment about it, I am trying to improve my technical skills. And please don't hold back if there's anything else you think I should keep an eye on (or what I could do to fix it). I really appreciate honesty, for I do want to improve (:

there's many things that could interfere with a great focus.
what kind of camera do you have ? also having some great lenses could really help, like the classic 50mm f/1.8 or f/1.4. It allows you to work in low light with less difficulties (i mainly work with my Canon 50mm f/1.8) than with a zoom lens.
but the best thing to avoid this is to work in great lighting conditions. the simple way is to work outside. if you're inside, you need some light reflected (avoid direct light of domestic bulbs). you could also change the ISO, but you'll get some noise. note that noise is not really a matter if you're planning to have a black & white photo. it adds a vintage feel if it's assumed.
i had this issue too and i discovered this was also a problem with the point of focus in my viewfinder. now i always use a central point, so i'm sure it will make the focus where I decided it to be. ([link] On your camera, select the central point). If you want to have a focus on an element that is on the right of your composition, just focus with the central point & move you camera while you keep half-pressing the trigger. You could choose another point, but i suggest you choose only one instead of letting the camera decides for you.
