I've read that you are about to finish a novel. Congrats on that! (I'll hopefully finish my first novel in the next months. It's very exciting. Β )

You're most welcome. Yes, I'm close-ish to finishing my urban fantasy. I'm a tad stuck at the moment though, so I'm using a local competition to get me out of the rut.Β

I have another novel that's already completed (wrote it during 2010 and got it to 3rd draft), but an accident with a failing laptop and a corrupted memory stick caused me to lose both second and third drafts, with the first trapped on my old computer. I did, through some miracle, manage to recently get the first draft off the old laptop using an IT desk at our local computer store. The problem is that it genuinely disheartened me. Having a story, I poured my heart and soul into, only to have it erased from existence took the wind from my sails. That's why I started writing this new novel, to clear my head and help me move on.Β

Now that it's almost finished, I want to return to the old novel and finally polish it into the gleaming diamond it was before disaster struck.Β

By the way, if you ever want any advice etc. I'm more than happy to help.Β

I have a kind of vicious enthusiasm-block-circle. For some time, writing is really easy and I get enthusiastic about the fact that, yes, this is becoming really good/I will finish soon/I've solved my major problems.... and then, writer's block is already lurking, because I suddenly get very afraid I'll still somehow ruin it. Usually, I switch to different, but related activities, such as world building. But it's a bit annoying that the enthusiasm always gets killed so easily.

I once had a failing hard drive when I was 14 or 15. Besides the typical teenager poetry and other stuff, I lost a story of about 20 pages, which was quite long for me at that time. It really sucked. Can't imagine how it must feel if that happens to a whole novel! I never rewrote my 20 pages. Also, I didn't really learn from the experience. When I bought a new laptop a few years ago, I always said to myself that I need to start making backups, save to a cloud etc. I never did, until the laptop broke. So I immideately went to the store and told them: "I don't care what you do with the laptop, I just really badly need the data." Everything could be restored, so I was lucky, and started to make backups regularly.

I wish you all the best for taking that new attempt on your old first draft!

You're welcome. You have lots of lovely pieces that I intend to read over the coming weeks.

If you don't mind me asking, what influenced you to get into writing poems?Β

Lady-Yume In reply to Meterious [2018-07-11 10:25:15 +0000 UTC]

Thank you, that's wonderful to hear! I hope you'll enjoy them (:

Awh, truly, that's fine (:
Truth be told, I've been both drawing and writing since I was a child, often trying my hand at stories but never quite seeing a project through to the end (I was fairly easily distracted as a kid ). In my high school years, I grew a love for poetry and how you could use it to convey something in as much, or little, words you needed, and started to read more and more. But it wasn't until I started working freelance in design and illustrating that I began to explore poetry as a means to express the other part of myself that still longed to write. It was here on dA, on an older account, that I plucked up the courage to post my works, and the lit-community played a big part on how my style/voice developed and dared me to try my hand on different forms (:

What influenced you to start writing?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Meterious In reply to Lady-Yume [2018-07-23 09:07:20 +0000 UTC]

That's fantastic! It's great to see you doing what you enjoy. The lit community on here is super supportive, and a lot better than other sites I've been on (where writers tend to backstab each other)Β

I got into writing at a young age as well. It started in my EnglishΒ literatureΒ lessons at primary school and blossomed after I finished film school. I originally wanted to get into film work, but after writing a short story for a friend of mine, I realised I had a passion for writing. It was my mum who encouraged me during the early days, and since then I've been writing novels.Β  I have one finished at the moment that needs editing, and I'm working on my second venture.Β  I learnt a lot of lessons (some terribly difficult ones), and this second story is a culmination of that.

Sorry for the late reply.Β  I haven't been on the site much these past couple weeks.Β

Lady-Yume In reply to Meterious [2018-08-03 15:26:19 +0000 UTC]

No worries about the late reply, these past weeks I've been absent a lot too (:

I totally agree, the lit-community on here is amazing; after all these years I still feel welcome and that's indeed a rare thing.

Thanks for your lovely reply; and thank you for sharing your story, too β€” it was inspiring, and also a bit familiar to read! It's a funny thing, isn't it, how you can end up doing something you love this much walking not a truly direct path. It was also lovely to read that your mum has played quite a big part in it, it's something I can relate to as my own family has also been incredibly supportive of my choices. After working in design and illustrating for several years, they encouraged me to go after my dream back in 2017, and since I've been combining my words and art as one under the name Kiyo; publishing my first book Dreamscape late last year (: I now work on my own publications, and use my art-drive for designing book covers for fellow indie-writers.

Congrats on finishing your first novel! Editing aside, finishing it is a whole great thing on it's own! What kind of genre do you write? And are you enjoying the process better, or more, on your second venture? (For yes, I know all about lesson's learned; some come really hard.)
Just out of curiosity because you studied film (which is something as a film-lover I find highly fascinating!), how did you progress to writing novels and not scripts?
