Those are great. I would love to see them in a larger map or added to a Google Earth map file.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Will-Erwin In reply to Misfit-KotLD [2014-04-28 21:12:19 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the kind words! I wish I could do that, myself.

The latest map is about 3375 x 2625 pixels, which is about the limit of what my laptop can handle with GIMP, which comes out to 34 inches x 26 inches on a computer screen, or about 8 1/2 by 11 printed at 300 dpi (close to photo-quality). At full resolution, I can see less than a quarter of the map on my screen.

Although I've used Google Earth imagery as a reference on my Rifts-based maps, I haven't tried fiddling with the software directly. I may try it in future, but I like making maps that are both functional and nice to look at. I'm one guy using open source programs on a laptop. Doing my style of map on a global scale would either be very low-definition or would require orders of magnitude more time, computing power, skill development, and software investment than I can afford.

Still, it's nice to dream.

Misfit-KotLD In reply to Will-Erwin [2014-04-28 22:15:25 +0000 UTC]

I figured as much. I've used Google Earth in my campaign previously and lamented the missing continent. So I shall dream of one day having Atlantis on it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Will-Erwin In reply to Misfit-KotLD [2014-04-28 23:53:58 +0000 UTC]

You could probably take the raw geography version of the map and add it as an overlay in Google Earth, scaling and placing it so that Bermuda and the Azores overlap with their Google Earth locations. It's a hodge-podge approach that won't match the natural color palettes of Google Earth, but it's something.

Misfit-KotLD In reply to Will-Erwin [2014-04-28 23:59:50 +0000 UTC]

If I had a clue how to do that. Come on, man. My character art is in Lego.

Will-Erwin In reply to Misfit-KotLD [2014-05-01 19:10:42 +0000 UTC]

No problem. Here's how you do it:

1. Zoom all the way in on the map of your choice. Right click it, and select "Copy". Open up Paint. Hit "Paste". Save this file to your desktop.
1. a. If you use the final map with the icons and stuff, and not the bare one, then I recommend that you crop the frame off. You can do this by opening the image in paint, using the "select" tool, and dragging diagonally across so that you select everything but the frame. Cut this, open a new paint file, and paste. Then save.
2. Open Google Earth. Make sure that the "Borders and Labels" layer box is checked.
3. Zoom in on the North Atlantic. You want Bermuda and the Azores to just be visible.
4. From the top menu, select Add > Image Overlay. Hit "Browse" and select the map file on your desktop.
5. After a few moments, the map will appear on the view. Do NOT close the New Image Overlay interface yet. Grab the top bar of the interface and move it off to the side.
6. The map should be in roughly the right place and at roughly the right size, but it won't be exact. Now you need to grab and drag the yellow corners of the map to make it match real-life places. Fortunately, the map has three handy reference points: Bermuda, the Azores, and Nova Scotia. Move the corners around until the real-life points match up well with the map points. This won't be exact, but it should be fairly close.
7. Once you're satisfied, close the "New Image Overlay".

Enjoy!
