basically what i did in 3d studio max was apply the textures to a sphere and then a light to get a main feeling of light. I had a total of 3 renders: one with the basic land, another one of the clouds, and another one with just the city lights. Then i brought it into photoshop, put one on top of the other, and added the stars, the sun, the moon, fine tuned the colors. Simple procedure, really, all it takes is practice
