Well, I am expecting one of our bottom feeders in my classroom to be dead this morning, he kept faking being dead yesterday, much to the amusment of my children.
Whats new? I am waiting till I can unpack my kitchen, bathroom since our renovations seem to be taking forever :S
How are classes going?

Ha ha, "your children"...

I'm waiting for my tank to be ready so I can get some fishies.. and studying for my first lab midterm this semester (ugh) next Thursday. I'm also faced with an interesting dilemma.. I had a sick note for stress (for two weeks) and that ends Saturday. Well, it's Friday, and guess what? I have a head cold. So I'm faced with the problem of showing up and possibly needing to go home sick, or calling in sick, either way, I'm sick RIGHT BEFORE my sick note is done. That is so messed up. I think I'm going to show up and see how it goes, but most likely I'll be going home if I still feel the way I do right now.

Ugh!! Well I hope you do feel better and you can pull through!
So the fish that was playing dead is still being dramatic by hanging upside and open mouthed, but you poke him and he swims away! I think he is just really bored and looking for attention.

Yeah, just finished my homework, freedom for the weekend! How is your long weekend looking?

Moirrey In reply to greeneyedenchantress [2012-10-07 02:45:10 +0000 UTC]

I showed up, stayed for 3 hours, went to the doctor and then went home. I have a note for tomorrow and today now. This is so insane. But I'm in the infectious stage of my cold, so I can't really go to work, can I? Plus I feel like crap, so why would I want to?

I never have 'freedom' on my weekends because in university, learning is a continuous chore... sigh. Haha. I really wish I had days off during semesters but it just seems like such an impossible concept. I can always think of something to do. The trick is actually making myself do it, though.

I'm supposed to be cooking at my place with JJ, and then inviting his family over, so hopefully I'm at least halfway better by then (and no longer infectious? that would be swell).

Bottomfeeder fish don't tend to be very active, fyi. Their fins aren't suited for constant swimming, they pretty much only move when they need to.

I don't mean to sound whiney... but yes, right now I'm somewhat miserable. Woe am I and all that. What are your plans for Thanksgiving?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

greeneyedenchantress In reply to Moirrey [2012-10-07 04:14:10 +0000 UTC]

I agree, that bottomfeeders aren't built for constant swimming but floating upside down looking dead? lol that fish has a new trick!
My thanksgiving consists of renovations (a constant but hopefully winding up soon) battle, going to my parents on sunday, and rimbey on monday. Personally I will just be glad to get out of the house, as we have no kitchen, living room, main bath or any peace Yeah I sound whiney too, but at least I get my kitchen back next weekend!!
Hope you feel better soon, and good luck with your cooking! That would just make me nervous to do that

Moirrey In reply to greeneyedenchantress [2012-10-08 17:23:11 +0000 UTC]

That might be something that they do to avoid predation... I'm not sure. It can't be all that uncommon, unless your fish is defective! I know you're joking, but nonetheless, there is no reason why they'd do it for attention. Bottomfeeders are even coloured so as not to be noticed, and fish probably aren't even aware of their human 'captors' enough to want to entertain them (assuming they even have the capacity to 'like' other organisms).

Wow, I'm such a killjoy. ahaha. I'm taking a course about fish right now, go figure hey? It's just like when I learned that an 'angel' is physiologically impossible - human bones are too heavy to be carried by wings, so such structures would never evolve or work if they existed. You can't effectively make human bones hollow, either, because then one punch would cause us to shatter (assuming there were still people with non-hollow bones, or even punching would be impossible), and it wouldn't be structurally sound considering our size and average mass as adults.

Yep, I'm a killjoy. Also, did you know that it's also impossible for humans to be tiny (close to bug-sized), like when Alice shrinks in Alice in Wonderland? She would have frozen to death, because at that size she would have to eat continuously just to make up for her high surface area-to-volume ratio (meaning, for her size she has a disproportionately high surface area through which to lose body heat), since we are homeothermic endotherms (regulate our own body temperature through metabolic processes).

Cooking doesn't make me nervous, but I can be a rather awkward duck in social situations involving more than ~3 people. Eeeeee!

Holy Cow was that an awesome bunch of information! What class are you taking that you are learning this, or where are you getting all this from?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Moirrey In reply to greeneyedenchantress [2012-10-09 03:02:09 +0000 UTC]

Hahah, some of it is from ecology courses, some of it from zoology courses, here and there really. Basically just stuff you learn while you're taking biology for as long as I have. Le sigh! If I were to list the exact courses, I'd say BIOL 313 is probably where I learned most of it.

I'm so unhappy because of school lately, even though I should be happy that it's almost over. It's so hard to see to the end of it all when you've been stuck in it for so long; it really feels endless and infinite, and it gets heavy.

I guess I should just be thankful that I have what you would call 'first world problems' and not something, you know, actually horrible.

As for Thanksgiving dinner, I was happy until it was over. Then I remembered that I have a lab midterm in three days. I also felt kinda bad because I was kinda out in space today and my boyfriend ended up doing most of the cooking. To be fair though, he mostly just had to boil potatoes, mix some ingredients together for gravy, and put together the stuffing. None of that is really hard, but I guess he doesn't do a lot of cooking, so yeah, I'm kind of a jerk (today at least). Oops.

How did your thanksgiving go?

greeneyedenchantress In reply to Moirrey [2012-10-09 04:11:23 +0000 UTC]

Thanksgivings went pretty good, got lots of leftovers from my parents which was great becasue we don't have a kitchen right now. His family was exciting as his newly wed cousin found out she was pregnant and announed it today. Note, we don't have a kitchen because of renovations, no bathroom, no laundry and no living room... ugh I want my house back!
Ugh, school, that reminds me of my school projects that I do NOT want to do, not because its hard, but because its... well... ugh... I have to videotape myself interacting with my children at work for at LEAST thirty minutes, and then document, report and discuss how I did. UGH.... Well at least after this term I only have one year left of jumping through hoops and squealing when told to squawk.
Glad your thanksgiving was a success though! Are you going to be in a convocation this year for your studies?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Moirrey In reply to greeneyedenchantress [2012-10-10 01:34:22 +0000 UTC]

That's good. That's one thing I really like about big dinners; if they are cooked at your house, you don't have to cook again for days and days. XD Or even if you don't, you're always asked to take leftovers, right? So it works out either way.

When did you say you were getting your kitchen back? I can't remember if you said a date in any of your comments.

School is a neverending chore.. at least it will be, for me, until April next year XD

I applied to graduate, which basically means that I've put in a request to graduate, and it now only depends on my completion of the five bio core courses I have left. I think it stipulates that if I meet my requirements by April, then I convocate (Graduate?) in spring, or if not (say if I redo a course in spring), then I graduate in fall. If I don't do either of those... then I have to finish whatever I didn't do and reapply. I sure hope that isn't the case.

Well as its looking right now, my kitchen is drywall painted so the cupboards which are being delivered tomorrow can be put in, then its the wonderful chore of unpacking my kitchen and rearranging so that I can use it... plumbing in next monday... so Monday is the blallpark figure at the moement.
Wow, your education sounds so complicated! With mine I just have to finish 8 classes and 2 practicum(three down, 1 class and one practicum current), but since they only offer two at a time, its going to take me till next december to gra-dumi-cate. Woot!

Moirrey In reply to heim1 [2012-05-27 02:38:00 +0000 UTC]

haha, well, sorta. I have two that WILL be in the works soon. One is a painting based on my roadkill frog (for a friend), which will be fairly small. I have yet to buy the canvas or any other materials I might need, for that. The other one is a drawing of a picture of a friend, which I did some outline work on weeks ago but haven't done much since (because of a final which was yesterday).

I anticipate starting/resuming these projects shortly. I just finished my recolour of Link, which you may or may not have seen. I resumed work on my other drawings that I'm digitally recolouring, as well.

What about you?
