Hello! I gave you a llama because you used icon/s that I adapted for dA (patreon) in the way meant to be used (thank you!! ). You are encouraged to keep using my icons to show which tool, software, company or social web you used in the making of a deviation, in a journal, status post or comment. No credit for me is needed (as the icon is credit enought), and also no need to request permission, you have the right to use the icons
If you use a tool, software or social web (or credit a character or company) I don't have the icon for, please tell me.
Tips:
- If you want 16x16 icons, you can search in my gallery by using the media menu and adding ultramini to the name of the software/etc you are searching.
- There are currently 5 sizes: big (very few ones yet, greater size than 50x50), normal (50x50), mid (35x35, not all has this size), mini (21x21) and ultramini (16x16). There are also animated icons. Animated icons are done only on request.
- You can also add a minus before the term you want to be excluded from the search "patreon by:linux-rules -mid -mini -ultramini" will return only the 50x50 icons).
- If you want to search by my icons you use "by:linux-rules".
- In composed icons (i.e. icons that are 1/2+2/2 etc.. there is a blank space when you introduce the icons from the add media menu ( )
If you remove the spaces, the icons will look better: . - this tips works with every artist, you can use that to search by other artist icons or works.
- More info about my icons .
- For suggesting any icon to me, click here: URLs to do icons

I'm sure I will! And I do need to surround myself more with references and inspirations, I do follow a few good art related blogs, but I don't see much from them, then again I suppose due to following so many other blogs doesn't help As for my Ratchet icon? I made that myself! I have to admit, your picture "Space Buddies" helped inspire that style of lineless cartooniness (as well as Creaturebox and B1nd1) I thought I was watching you already, but I found you now

I just checked your page again, and I see you're a professional (cool beans)! I would ask what kind of degree you got, but I'm not sure if it's different in the UK vs. the US. I really want to work towards being an animator too, I animate some things, but they're not that great, however I really find myself happiest working on an animation more than just a regular drawing sometimes.
I really hope it goes well for you! I know it can be a bit challenging with the industry growing, but there are probably plenty of places hiring too!

Midsea In reply to Monsterhandholder [2014-01-11 02:13:06 +0000 UTC]
As in I'm trying to make a living out of it yes ,not yet very successful...but there's not a " professional in training option" so it's more a hint that I take my art seriously....as seriously as you can take cartoon drawing .
I got a BA Honours in animation at uni. I did a course where you could learn both some 2d and cg animation and I've done courses since I graduated. I just finished a self taught one on story boarding with Schoolisum. Things like Schoolisum and online teaching are much cheaper and you know your teacher knows what they're teaching. so their worth checking out if your interested but unless you can make it to a meet up you don't really get to touch bace with other animation people or get the experience of working on a team. A warning when you picking too;2d animation is useful to learn but there's not as much ask for a 2d animator as there is 3d. Though 2d is easier to do on a budget I find (Easier to practise at home.) and will feed your over all animation knowledge.
I can give you a little list of books that have really helped me too if you want? Most animation courses would probably tell you to buy them anyway, might as well get a head ;D.
Also you might want to check out monkey jam it's a free pencil test program, useful for playing back computer drawn animation or if you have a descent camera you can even use it for stopmotion.
Thank you ! There is a fair bit out there if you know where to look, but I'm told getting your foot in the door is the hardest part and it seem to be true.

Wow, thanks for the info and suggestions! I'd like to hear about the type of books they'd recommend, I've heard of maybe one or two books myself, but one that I own is kinda outdated by a lot, the other I downloaded for free and it talked about 2D animation and cartoons. I can't remember, I need to really get myself to reading it again sometime to refresh myself.
I appreciate you telling me about this! Honestly, animation is something I'd just love to geek out about, but I don't have any close friends aspiring to be animators anytime soon. However they come to appreciate it and the art of it. Also I'm super stoked to hear about that free program, I've been using Photoshop CS5 to animate, which is pretty good, just it can be wonky trying to do countless frames and such. I suppose it might work the same, but I like sinking my teeth into different programs to just have a feel for something new!

You're very welcome. I think artists should support each other .
Ok I will give you a list when I get home, am staying round my grandparents for a while so don't have my book list on me. (Also why my reply was slow.)
What are the two books you've got?
No problem, like I said I think we should artists should be supportive c:. People have given me advise and help in the past and still do every now and then I wouldn't still be drawing without them. Hehe that's cool , yeah we're not as common as the internet might make you think. Artistic discussions are something I really miss from uni. Artistic friends are rare but important to hold on to when you find them, friends are always good but it helps if they understand your passions. If you ever need help or to ask someone something or what have you, feel free to note me c:.
Well monkey isn't a drawing programme more a "putting it together" one that you could edit it all together in and pump it out as a playable video....it can add sound but you can't edit sound files in it so it has to already line up perfectly with the animation.
Photoshop is actually pretty good for animation. You have good drawing control and can make layers transparent so they act like animation paper. I find It's just time consuming exporting all the frames/layers. .... I might be able to help with the wonky problem but I'm not sure how your using it so I'm not sure how to advise on making it less wonky , you have to tell me more.

It's more like 3 books now that I look back on it, two of the books are really thick and talk about how to go around in Maya 7 and 3Ds Max 5, I recall trying to use the one book with a trial version of Maya, but I feel the books are a bit outdated? I suppose the controls would be the same, but the layouts may have changed. And the 3rd book I seem to not have, sadly, it was a book that went over how animation just blossomed and the writer of the book worked with famous animators for things like Tom and Jerry, getting to practice and have them help train him in animating.
I appreciate the help very much! I understand you must be busy, I do too with school and such, so I won't try to pester you too much
"Wonky" might not really be the word, it's kinda like what you said with exporting the frames and how that could be an issue. I don't typically make long animations, usually something small enough to be a .GIF on DeviantArt and Tumblr, and I usually try to make it loop since it's always nicer to have that fluid feel. I suppose in the future with bigger projects it might get more complicated using Photoshop (I already find I can't import audio into it while animating, that might be where Flash would come in?) I do have a video editing program called "Camtasia" and while it doesn't do exactly animation, with enough patience I could use that when in doubt

Whoops! XD Sorry accidentally pressed enter still that was all the books and drawn to life looks like this www.amazon.co.uk/Drawn-Life-Cl… and this www.amazon.co.uk/Drawn-Life-Cl…
Also you're welcome .
Ah ok, yeah it takes forever :/, there might be a cheat way but I haven't found it yet. I don't know I quite like using photoshop to animate though I kind of miss my light box days but that's just me I think most 2d studios now use some kind of modified flash or toonboom... that's what my teachers told me but I might be wrong. The program is not as important as what you know about 2d animation though.
Yeah flash is more built for animating but they made it vector so I find it suffers greatly in drawing quality and imports tend to warp. Well so long as it excepts video files and audio files its good for editing together animation .

Oh gosh thank you so very much! I'm keeping these for reference, I probably will try getting one or two of these books. I obviously will get them inevitably if college requires them! You've been so helpful and resourceful, I honestly cannot thank you enough.
Photoshop is the best I got so far, so I won't complain about it too much. I'm glad to even have it in the first place and have it do what it can! I do recall some pretty astonishing animations people have done on it. I need to seriously get to practicing more, like make my own little "artist workout"

Ok they sound cool but I'd defiantly say get the books I'm gonna suggest, the sooner you learn what they teach the better(just because their a good building block to anyone's skills c.
The first is "The Animator's Survival Kit" by Richard Williams www.amazon.co.uk/The-Animators… you don't have to buy it off amazon I'm just showing you what your looking for, get the extended version it's cheaper and has more in. Richard Williams made Who Framed Rodger Rabbit he's an amazing animator but a perfectionist. He likes everything on ones but they don't have to on ones . This book is great for teaching you timing, brake downs and just about everything you need to know about the basic principles of all animation and refresh you or give you a nudge when you get stuck on stuff. and it's full of useful examples, though some are a little plain cause they are just examples. It is on dvd too but it's expensive on dvd and I personally found the book more helpful cause it's to hand.... it might be on app to...I'm not sure I might of dreamt that XD.
And I advise going over and over the ball exercise it really helps you under stand timing. It's a big book but not to word heavy and worth it.
Second book is "Acting for Animators" by Ed Hooks www.amazon.co.uk/Acting-Animat… he appears to have changed the cover since I got my copy but looking inside I'm pretty sure this is it. Which is more a acting theory book but I found it interesting and helpful.
I can't help you with good 3d animation books but the principles are always the same from 2d to 3d to Stopmotion and there are a lot of on-line tutorales even on the offical maya and zbrush sites.
And apparently 11 second club has some tips www.11secondclub.com/resources…
Other books I would suggest getting are more about drawing but they're mostly written by animation people. So teach getting movement, gesture and "thinking in 3d" and as you understand and practise these more and more both your drawing and animation will grow. They are:
"The art of animal drawing" by Ken Hultgren www.amazon.co.uk/Art-Animal-Dr… . This one really helped me think and draw more in 3d and capture animals quicker and is easy to practise from observation if you have a pet like a cat, dog- I found Cows, zebra and horses are the best cause they brake down easiest. )
The" Force" books by Michael d Mattesi www.amazon.co.uk/Force-Dynamic… there are 3 in the force series but this is the only one I have so far, they all look good though, he's a great artist.
and maybe the "Drawn to Life" books by Walt Stanchfield, there is 2 of them and they have ALOT of general knowlage from the disney animators. It's ton to read but it's good stuff so brake reading it down for yourself.
