No problem! Your gallery looks interesting but I didn't have time to give it a closer look at the moment so I'll be back a less busy time

Ad Faery Rat: You wrote that it was adaptet as a tattoo. Do you have a pic of that? I'd love to have this picture as a tattoo on my own.
Greetings
Wolke

It was another girl who contacted me and asked if she could have her tattooist adapt it for a tattoo for her, so I only got a photo of how it turned out, no tattoo image that's free for anyone to use. They adapted the image to be more photo-like and in line with her other tattoos. But thanks for showing your interest and the fav!

Wow, Magicka Huts is awesome! I would love to be able to make textures like that. Do you happen to have any knowledge to pass on to someone trying to make better textures?
Thanks so much for the inspiring picture and for any help you can provide!

Moorstream In reply to Legendary-Tale [2009-12-31 09:00:16 +0000 UTC]
Thank you for the kind comment! The huts are actually 2D all the way and doesn't contain textures in the cg-sense. I have made huts later in 3D though which looks quite similar. I'm not sure how much I could help without showing in person or adding pictures of the process. My stronger part it actually 2D (traditonal painting) and I don't have much formal training doing cg work. I have mostly tried to apply what I've learned during all my traditional years, and what I believe is most useful is to learn the basic art skills thoroughly. Study real life a lot for light, materials, surface textures and such. I guess this is the kind of complicated answer that doesn't really give any quick help but there aren't many shortcuts and one simply needs a lot of experience.
If you're thinking of any particular technique-related question just ask away and I'll see if I have enough knowledge to help

Thank you for the reply!
For the most part I noticed the fantastic transitions from grass to dirt and was wondering how you made that. I have been trying to use a program called Paint.NET to layer different types of texture (dirt and grass) for an attempt at a realistic look, but I either end up with a blurred transition or a very cartoonish look.
A second note is the grass itself which has a quality that I could almost feel. I was curious as to whether the game was tile based at the time and if it was, how the grass would be used without there being any seams.
A last question is just, what did you use to make it? As said above, I have been trying to use Paint.NET, but I have yet to see any way to create effects like those in Magicka Huts; without manually drawing each pixel.
However you did it, Mgicka Huts is a great piece of work and thank you for posting it! Thanks again for your replies!

I'll always reply if somebody has a question or meaningful comment
I've been using only Photoshop CS for these images. For the transition to dirt I put the dirt texture as a layer under the grass and erased away some grass with a small pixly brush. I have never tried the program you mention and can't say anything about the difference to Photoshop. In this case I used a hard brush that removed a small bunch of pixels at a time.
About the creation of the actual grass I can't say that much, it was another cg artist, that we had in the group before, that made most of it. I painted everything about the hut and the grass edges around it, and used his grass for backdrop.
Yeah, we made all the ground textures tiling, in sizes usually 512X512 or 256x256 pixels. Photoshop has a good offset filter that lets you wrap/scroll the texture vertically and horizontally so you can paint over the seams. You also have to think of not making any spots, colours or light changes that really stands out when you tile the texture.
Thanks for your kind words and I'm always interested in discussing techniques
