The emoticons? I use Photoshop, but that tends to be a bit pricey for most. GIMP is a good free program, and tutorials for it abound.

When I do work on things, I either grab something off it at random, something that catches my interest at the time, or do a coin-flip tournament with full branches and sometimes a map because I'm special.
