Lots and lots and lots of practice.

Gerre's an absolutely amazing artist!

I don't have the patience to do that, unfortunatly ; but I'm trying (with loads of mistakes xD)

Gerre is an absolute hero for me; I really admire her work! Wish I could do what she can .

Leochi In reply to MushedPatatoes [2010-02-05 20:10:32 +0000 UTC]

Awww, sorry to hear you don't have the patience to practice. You're probably interested in lots of other things, so it's hard to sit there and just draw/paint.
I find it really useful to carry a little block with me all the time and to sketch people on the bus or on the underground, that gives one practice, too.

Yes, Gerre is wonderful indeed, but she also worked hard to get where she is, now.

Yeah well; I also have loads to do for school that requires also loads of drawing. So when I'm finished with that I mostly try to relax. And unfortunatly it doesn't include drawing anymore, wich I find a sad situation. I try to do something about it though .

I always admired people who do what you do; carry a little sketchbook with you all the time. At the train I mostly read, in the morning I'm way too tired to draw and in the evening I'm fed up with the drawing .

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Leochi In reply to MushedPatatoes [2010-02-06 06:55:20 +0000 UTC]

Oh, are you in art school then? Yes, I believe you when you say that you don't find drawing relaxing anymore if you HAVE to do lots of it.

LOL - there's nothing to admire about people carrying little sketchbooks with them. In fact, I guess most people think they're just a bit weird. Reading is a very good alternative, though. When I'm not drawing I often read, too.

MushedPatatoes In reply to Leochi [2010-02-06 14:33:16 +0000 UTC]

Uhu, I'm doing Graphic Design in the Academy of Antwerp. And I like it, but sometimes I'd rather not draw for a while :").

Ha, I do admire them though. I absolutly can't stand the fact that people are watching me draw (weird, I know). I'm feeling 'watched' when that happens xD. So when I see people who CAN do that, I'm always a little 'jealous' (by lack of a better word).
I also often carry a little book with games in it with me; like crosswords and such. I find it fun to do, but many times people on the train are watching me like 'wtf?' (often people my age). Dunno what's weird about that though xD.

Leochi In reply to MushedPatatoes [2010-02-06 16:05:02 +0000 UTC]

Oh, that's quite understandable. Having to do something is totally different to doing something for pleasure. I've experienced that last summer when an acquaintance asked me to illustrate her kids' poems. I've never had a harder time drawing something in my life.

But I still think you're a lucky girl. I've never had the opportunity to study arts because my family urged me to do something "sensible" and rather study languages and translation. That was nice, too, but I've always liked art better. (My mother studied arts herself and strongly dissuaded me to do the same.) Well, so I somehow had to teach myself and to discover and experiment things at my own pace.

LOL - I don't mind people watching me draw, as I teach my students to do it all the time and they just love to group around me when I sketch them from time to time. But I can totally understand you not wanting to be observed, some of my kids are shy, too.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MushedPatatoes In reply to Leochi [2010-02-07 18:18:09 +0000 UTC]

Oh, here it was quite the opposite. My parents really wanted me to do something with arts. The rest of my familie just didn't care what I went to do, to be honest. With the exeption of an aunt of my dad; she likes to press my nose to the fact that she finds studying art "a waste of time". Luckily I only see her once a year, so I mostly ignore the woman.

(I find languages an translation very interessting though; if I wouldn't to this I would probably do something like that to)

You teach drawing to kids then? Looks like a nice but exhausting job, no?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Leochi In reply to MushedPatatoes [2010-02-08 16:28:59 +0000 UTC]

LOL - Glad you don't get pestered very often by this special aunt. And I envy you for having and art loving family.

Languages are wonderful, I really love them and enjoy talking/writing more than one language quite fluently. I don't like translation, though, but I enjoy teaching languages. (I teach German and English and I would really love to teach French, too, but we don't have it at our school.

As I am a classroom teacher, I teach pretty everything excepting Chemistry and Physics. My class is a second grade (about 8 yrs) and my English classes are 3rd and 8th graders. There are indeed teachers that are constantly exhausted, but I enjoy doing what I do so much, I rather enjoy the challenge. And I love working with kids, too.

My mum paints as a hobby and my dad works with culinary publishers; he does the scanning of the photo's and works the mistakes away. One uncle and my brother are doing photography as a hobby; and loads of people on my mother's side are doing artistic stuff. So I'm not the only one .

Normally I'm supposed to talk french fluently, but I'm rubbish at it. It's one of the two main languages here (I speak dutch - I live in Belgium) but they're few people who can speak the two good. It's a shame really. My english is quite allright; but that's the only foreign language I know.

Very nice to hear that you love your job!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Leochi In reply to MushedPatatoes [2010-02-12 20:11:45 +0000 UTC]

Wow, what an art loving family! You're a lucky girl. And thank you for telling me.

Hm, I suppose it's a bit difficult to be really good at a language that isn't regularly used at home, even if it's the second main language. (And if I'm correct, the Dutch speaking Belgians aren't overly fond of the French speaking ones, that's at least the impression one gets when reading about Belgium. I've never been there, myself, but my parents had Belgian friends, when I was a kid, and I quite liked their children - we used to play together and they talked very funny French. )

You've got very cute photos of yourself, btw. I've used the one with your younger self as a reference for a little Luna, today. I'm afraid it's not a very good pic, but I just loved the colour combination.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MushedPatatoes In reply to Leochi [2010-02-12 21:12:06 +0000 UTC]

It's a difficult situation; there are people who would like to see Belgium devided but I'm not one of them. I see myself as a Belgian person, not a "dutch speaking person". Loads of people though find that the french speaking people should learn dutch while in primary school, like we learn french at age 10. Here it's part of the lesson program, in the french speaking part it's not and I find that wrong. After all, we have 2 languages as main language.
BUT; I find that both sides should learn the other language since age 6 or 7 (the younger, the better). Almost no one from the french ones can speak dutch; but there are also too few dutch ones that can speak good french (and sadly, I am one of them). It's very difficult and it drives many people nutters :").
And yeah, Belgium didn't get in the news very positive lately xD. Wich is, typical really. Small country, big problems . But I like living here .

Aaaw, that's sweet . My dad took it; and now that you mention it, it does look like Luna

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Leochi In reply to MushedPatatoes [2010-02-13 15:29:40 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it's always the same, really. Typical: Small country-Big problems. (Or at least the problems seem to be big because everyone concentrates on them.)

You know, if I had to cast Luna I would definitely choose you.

(I mean the grown-up you, too. )

MushedPatatoes In reply to Leochi [2010-02-15 22:06:09 +0000 UTC]

Funny, we were talking about problems in Belgium and then a train accident happens here. Yeah well, the situation in itself isn't funny ofcourse, but you know what I mean.
I always sit on the front of the train; I'll probably won't to that anymore.

And ha! I do like clothing that's very colourfull and funny; just like Luna I suppose. Sooo funny that you would cast me as Luna while you don't really know me . I guess you can read people very well . I don't have blond hair though; I'm a brunette. But if I walk in the sun a lot my hair turns blond again .

I'm really sorry for all those who were injured or killed in that train accident. Such a horrible thing to happen!

Yes, you be careful where you sit on a train - the middle section is the best, I guess.

Hehe, I saw a few of your photos and I thought: "My ideal Luna!" And the way you've drawn the main HP characters would be the way I imagine Luna to be drawing.

Those colourful drawings are adorable, btw.!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MushedPatatoes In reply to Leochi [2010-02-16 17:39:42 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it's horrible. And there are still people missing I've heard. They said on the news that they've heard from a good source that one of the drivers ignored a stop sign. Today loads of people who work at the traincompany were striking. I need to go the Ghent tomorrow so I hope I don't have too much trouble. And I'm going to sit in the middle section, just to be sure.

Haha I do like colour very very much. And I love the idea of radish-earrings. Maybe I'll make earrings like that for myself .

Thank you for all the favs by the way that really made my day!

Be careful! (And I hope you will manage to do your trip).

Colours are the most wonderful thing God/Nature invented.

Radish earrings would certainly suit you - make a photo of yourself if you ever wear them.

You're welcome for the faves - your pics make one happy just by looking at them.

I hope so to! Sometimes the trains here really get on my nerves. I need to go to Antwerp every day for school and every week I have at least one train delayed. During summer I don't really care, but in winter... brrrr.

I agree with that sometimes everything is so grey; everyone should wear colour!
And I will; not sure how I will make them though :").

Aaaaww thank you

I love your HP stuff, your style is just sooo cute

I think exactly the same. That way you can give that person something unique, and when they look at it they will think of me (I hope).
And I certainly hope that they love me 'cause I love them

Oh, I can't handle all these compliments :") it's very nice to hear though. After I finish my exams I'm going to try to make some more HP stuff. I've been neglecting it, sadly enough. The last thing I've drawn that was sort of decent was the christmas card, and that's not even HP-related! Shame on me...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Asolus In reply to MushedPatatoes [2010-01-12 18:34:49 +0000 UTC]

You deserve them sugar!

I haven't been able to draw anything HP related in yonks. I'm on a bit of a Star Trek oompa at the moment - I used to draw nothing but R/Hr, methinks I need to do some more.
I think the best thing you can do is just doodle, some of my best work comes about when I'm not trying to force anything

MushedPatatoes In reply to Asolus [2010-01-12 21:16:26 +0000 UTC]

Thanks
Yeah, I've noticed the Star Trek art never watched the series though (hides).
I do a lot of doodling (is that a word?); and then I think "yeah, that looks allright" but when I see it the next day I think it looks awful :") but I'm too strict for myself I think.

And urgh, my english is reeeeally bad.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Asolus In reply to MushedPatatoes [2010-01-12 21:27:10 +0000 UTC]

English isn't your first language?
Seriously, I had no idea, I just assumed that it was your first language. I am very impressed! And I think doodling is a word!
I used to be the same, I used to hate everything I did, but more recently I've just been putting uploading everything, and it's made me more confident.
It encourages me to improve.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MushedPatatoes In reply to Asolus [2010-01-12 22:17:02 +0000 UTC]

Ha, no I'm from Belgium so my first language is dutch (and I'm supposed to speak french too because that's another official language here, but I'm terrible at it). Belgium, land of chocolate, beer, ridiculous political stuff Γ nd Kim Clijsters & Justin Henin! *proud*
Okay, it seems that my english isn't that bad as I first was thinking, ha! I always have the feeling I make ridiculous spelling mistakes (like my profile name; two very big mistakes) or that something else is wrong.
Maybe I have to follow your example and post more doodle-stuff. 'Cause I need encouragement. Loads of it.
