As someone who has only just started trying to learn 3D as a means to create, your work is very inspiring
I have fallen in love with ZBrush, but its going to take some time to teach myself how to use it properly lol.

Thanks man. Zbrush is awesome. I fell in love with it as well, and pretty much quit illustrating just to sculpt. Let me know if I can help

Hi, how is it going? I've tried Keyshot recently and yeah, you were right it is really simple and fast. I should play with it more later. I heard there is a plugin for Zbrush in development that will allow to transfer even polypaint and fibermesh. Still I miss some features. Are you working on something new in Zbrush?

I am working on something new. I'm doing a new toy model for Hasbro and this one is gonna be even better than the last. I also did an illustration on Zbrush, I should update my stuff at some point. Keyshot is awesome, I'm glad you got a chance to finally try it out. I think that for speed and quality its one of the best. I'll try to post stuff up soon. How are you doing?

Yeah, it would be nice to see updates from you and your progression. I'm not updating my gallery often as well.Β
What do you mean while talking about illustration in Zbrush? Are you talking about using sculpt for a paintover in photoshop/painter or you are about painting directly in Zbrush (via Zsketch, 2.5D or PaintStop plugin)?
Yes, I was amazed with Keyshot speed. Even on my old PC it runs really fast. Much faster than Cycles in Blender (it is GPU oriented).Β
I'm Ok, thanks. After the long break started sculpting again. Making Centaur-girl now. The major part is already done but I'm making small tweaks almost every day during 10-11 days already. I feel that something is still wrong but cannot realize what exactly. Bu eventually I will make it - it is just a matter of timeΒ

What I did was a sculpture in Zbrush, polypainted and rendered in zbrush. Then rendered/exported in passes to photoshop to complete the rest of the image in 2D. Its rather simple as its supposed to be a magazine cover. I'll post it up soon within the next 2 weeks once my school gets out. I have so much stuff due around this time.
Hmmm. I'll check your gallery if its up, maybe I can give you my two cents.

OK, will be awaiting for updates. Magazine cover? Sounds great.Β
It would be nice to hear any suggestions from you. The last critique about arm length was really helpful. Ironically I'm having a similar issue again since obviously that Centauride doesn't have well defined human pelvis so I have lesser amount of bony landmarks (like great trochanter of the femur or middle of the thigh) to check the arm length.

I still didn't upload full body-shots of my heroine to talk about proportion problems. But here is even better exercise - breaking through uncanny valley. Gosh, I never realized how hard it is. Maybe because a lot of my characters were stylized. I uploaded two versions of her face: one from Zbrush and another one from Maya. Sure, they are still wips but I'm having a hard time to find what exactly makes her falling into uncanny valley. My thoughts it is because too hard eye-shadows and makeup overall, because her eyes are too opened and probably because I forget to add a tongue. And maybe because very basic specularity of her skin. What do you think?

Myselfsama In reply to Vir-Norin [2013-12-11 13:38:11 +0000 UTC]
Honestly, I think your falling into the uncanny valley before all of the cosmetic changes. Take out all of the polypaint info and put her on a flat grey matcap. No colors, or values, just sculptural information. It'll be easier to see it that way. Also put a spread up of front, 3/4ths and profile.
This is definitely difficult, because if your trying to push for realism you might have to abandon some initial sculpting choices you've made. Its hard to tell exactly what that might be without seeing her from different angles, but I remember a while back when you were making the red head girl I mentioned about the stylization of her jawline, and features. Sacrificing realism for aesthetic, which is perfectly fine depending on what your trying to do. On this latest girl in particular, I've pulled out some features so you can see them on their own. Notice, how the mouth alone, doesn't look right. Or the Nose alone doesn't look right. The eyes are ok, but a different angle of it might break it as far as realism goes too.

The muscles of the bottom lip should be tucked underneath the the top lip at the sides, creating a small recess/dimple at the corners of the mouth. The nose bridge feels kind of thick and still very planar in terms of sculpting, it feels like it got stuck in the 2nd pass of sculpting. If your seriously looking to push realism, your going to want to study masters of traditional. One guy in particular that I like is Philippe Faraut. He has written I think 2-3 books on sculpting the face and features, and has DVDs as well. You should check him out if you can.Β

Just uploaded some turntables if you are interested. There are a lot of room to criticize since pose is quite tricky and a lot of things happens in her arms (twisting, stretching and squashing). I wrote some obvious flaws in the description though but I believe there are many other things that should be fixed.

Vir-Norin In reply to Myselfsama [2013-12-11 21:16:26 +0000 UTC]
My personal thoughts it is probably a shading or lighting fault. I absolutely like her shapes without any textures in Zbrush. Her facial proportions are far from classic one, but I did this intentionally since it was a likeness sculpt first. Later I just changed her features to break the likeness to avoid any possible problems since I will make nudity shots. It always happens to me - I like how my models looks in Zbrush, rendered with BPR but I'm failing to do it in mental ray. I believe this is because BPR gives me a bit stylized look so I can forgive some shading mistakes. But when I'm rendering in mental ray with physically based lighting, camera, proper exposure, true reflections and more or less life-like translucency, it shifts my renders towards realistic side so any shading issue became much more noticeable and crusial. This is why I'm thinking the problem appears on the mental ray stage.Β
Not quite sure what is wrong with the nose. I'm fine with it (prototype girl also has a bit shortened hence broad looking nose). Though I agree there is something odd with the mouth. When I'm hiding the lower part of the image it doesn't feel odd. But again, since I don't have the same feel when looking at her in Zbrush I assume it is shading fault. I should mention that I'm using still experimental MILA shaders for mental ray. One big issue is that I always used older architectural materials for the diffuse component because it has build-in Ambient Occlusion (AO). When rendering with low quality setting of final gather it is a huge help since it adds additional shadowing where global illuminations fails to do. Unfortunately, new shaders aren't supporting this feature yet. So, basically, what I'm trying to say is that in this image the lips are a bit undefined (the bottom of the top lip visually almost fuses with teeth). It wouldn't happen If I rather use older shader. Though it is not an issue at all in colored version. So... maybe there are too much of subsurface scattering (killing shadows on the lips and making them undefined and flat). I'm not really sure but I believe the lipstick should totally block the translucency effect. And of course there are no roughness, glossiness and reflectivity maps so it also may be a reason. As well as a bad lighting that doesn't show her forms in a full glory. But as i said in the description - I really want to achieve good results only with natural lighting since the final shot would be outdoors.
Also, about lips. Of course I know the structure of the orbicularis oris since female lips are my most favorite part of the face. Her upper lip slightly covers the lower lip, BTW it is not the mouth corner creating a dimple. It is rather a mouth node (place where labial tractors making attachment) bulging superiorly and laterally to the corner of the mouth. Everything is present but not very visible here (I should post some close-up images)
Thanks for the link. I will definitely check it. Now I think I should take a rest and analyze everything. One common opinion I heard from many people it that something with a mouth. I will start from it
PS sure I will let you know. Right now I'm posting fibermesh experiments - yet another headache (cause Maya's funky hair system)
