I just sketched it in pencil then scanned/lined/colored in photoshop. I actually want to re-do it soon because I'd never really tried chibi-style before that id!

I don't know. This has been going on for so long and she's still denying it and being a total jerk and refusing to take the art down ("My computer won't load the pages! I swear! I don't lie!" ...And then she told me that she'd taken the pieces down just before she blocked me. I don't know if she thought that I couldn't see her gallery while I was blocked or what, but... the art is still there, honey), that at this point I'm kind of hoping she'll just get banned so the whole stupid thing can stop. It'll give her a chance to start over, anyway, or hopefully so.

I would feel bad for her, if she wasn't being so stupid about it. I understand the urge to copy from an artist who's better than you are, but if I was caught, I wouldn't keep on and keep on denying it in the face of stupidly obvious evidence and then claim I made the original artist's work 'better'.

I can't judge her too harshly for the initial copying. I used to be a pretty stupid kid too, and did my own fair share of copying-then-displaying without thinking I was doing anything wrong. Though, the difference with me was as soon as someone pointed out to me what I was doing wrong and why, I went into total embarrassed apology mode, and the person I'd copied was very kind, and welcomed me to keep the drawings up, as long as I credited. I was so embarrassed that I took them down from my site, though.

But the way this girl is acting isn't good. She's been called out on it, and no one would think less of her if she'd just given credit where it was do, or if she were to respect CWJ's wishes to have the directly copied ones taken down.

And yea, she 'made it better'? It's kind of exactly the same, and saying something like that makes one seem like a fool.

I was always pretty neurotic about my crediting and disclaimers, since I was super-afraid of copyright law... XD But I see people forget to do it all the time, I just think it's a bit more of a deal when someone copies a pose directly from someone's unreferenced drawing without asking or crediting them. Even if it's not traced. I mean, it is a private drawing, not stock or a doll, it's probably courteous to ask for permission.

Yep. It wasn't the original calling out that was a big deal, it's the way she's making a big stink over it and refusing to give in. I don't even understand why she's doing it anymore -- does she think we're going to give in if she keeps denying it, or is she just so attached to the three faves she has on the copies, or what?

...Actually, Cat's drawings were better. Tracings never turn out as good as the original, especially if the tracer isn't as good as the original artist. What's stupid is that, from what I've seen from this girl's gallery, she's not a horrid artist in her own right -- just starting out, but not awful. That is, if anything in her gallery is really hers. I'm suspicious of everything she has uploaded at this point.

Oh, I fully agree Cat's are better-- because there's no way tracing someone else's work can 'make the work better', for the reason you mentioned. I trace from time to time, but I do NOT do it for works I intend to finish/publish. I trace to try to understand how a particular artist creates an effect I like, just to get the feeling in my hands-- but no one should ever trace for works that they're going to try to claim as their own. That's just asking for trouble...

I trace too occasionally, to understand how other artists draw their anatomy and things, but if I post anything of that kind, it goes in Scraps and is clearly indicated to be a tracing of someone else's work for educational purposes. People's drawings are not bases or pose references unless stated to be so, and they should not be used in that way without the artist's permission.
