From your use of the riddle, I thought you knew. ^^ Both the riddle, and Schmendrick the magician, appear in Peter S Beagle's beautiful book [and the equally beautiful Rankin-Bass animated film] The Last Unicorn. Definitely give it a watch sometime.
At one point, in order to distract a character and keep him occupied, Schemndrick asks him the raven and writing desk riddle.

The riddle originally appears in Alice In Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll. That's where I knew it from.
