# About me

I have had a passion for clay and sculpture for as long as I can remember. Though I grew up in a very technical and computer oriented family, some of my fondest memories are of summer pottery classes at the local art museum. In college, I took a turn toward mathematics and computer science, and over the next 35 years, I followed a fulfilling and profitable career as a Software Engineer. However, I never forgot my love for sculpture.

I am still amazed by the pure joy I experience when I have my hands in the clay. I find that my work communicates on many different levels, from the practical and utilitarian to a simple reflection of the beauty I see around me. It may expresses a response of hope or fear or love, or it may be a simply reflection the little kid inside of me at play. For me, clay and sculpture become a language to express thoughts, emotions, or insights for which I have no words.

As much as I love to create with clay, I also love to teach others to experience that same joy. Young people are naturally drawn to clay, even when their technical skills are simple. With a little bit of instruction and encouragement, they quickly gain the confidence that they too can create something of value. Clay is such a malleable material that the art flows naturally from their active imaginations.

More recently, my journey has been discovering what it looks like to integrate the truth of my relationship with Christ, and my expression as an artist. I am learning to let the creative process develop in such a way that it reflects the complicated dynamic of my Faith–something which is not always pretty or positive or well understood, but which carries underneath it the reality of Hope.

Thus the theme, “Reflecting faith, hope and beauty through art.”

Question for you, So I've been trying to level up my anatomy game, and while I feel like I'm making strides, I'm not particularly happy with some features I've been working on as of late. I was wondering how do you get a more natural feel to the body, I'm finding my work despite being natural or dynamic posing, and even though the faces are relaxed, the body feels too fake or stiff. My last female image I've been working on and still rendering. Feels like she has fake breasts out of hollywood, despite trying for a fashion pose and to keep the image a certain way for clothing and armor. It'll be a base later when finished. I've used different models in the past some even not so toned and a bit more flabby but even still my work lacks a natural feel, I feel. :/ I've not posted up everything I work on. I have a lot of sketches in my notebook and sadly feel I lack body diversity.

Awesome thank you for this and the links I am checking the out and saving them now. Also Proko is 404ing I don't know why? I guess maybe I am a little stiff in the sense that I try to put pressure on creating absolutely spot on as much as possible. I'll keep working at it. Did some bust sketches and finally got a more natural looking breast on the computer its much easier with pencil than the tablet like you are saying.

I just tried the day 1 of the figuary after reading the Love Life Drawing webpage and I started balling through the video. I feel like I've been missing out for so long. I avoided stuff like this and tend to avoid nudes in general because I got raised in a weird environment. You being a Christian as well probably understand all too well what I am talking about and how some people think it is a sin to even learn to draw. Especially the nude form, but doing this class felt beautiful and the model was beautiful, I saw her for one of God's creatures. The imperfections, the bruising and broken blood vessels in her ankle and foot. I just felt so much better about my body and my imperfections. Hollywood and the wicked side of the world has done too much damage in the self-image and self-esteem department.

Thank you so much for sharing this with me. I really appreciate it! I also found it cool that she was unsteady and her hands and body still involuntarily moving a bit, as it is impossible to be completely still. It would shake me out of the video and put a conscious awareness that I was looking at something live even though it was pre-recorded something that wasn't still like an image or a video in the sense of being acted. It was natural.

Lol I just realized the proko link you sent me. I'm subscribed to him on youtube, but I forgot about it because I've been following a lot of people on art, history, and science. Awesome. :3 I didn't know he had extended out away from patreon and youtube into a website. I like them better more professional feeling. I've been watching tons of videos from industry professionals on youtube and some of them are a bunch of entitled rude and unprofessional brats... (One of them even called Proko a lazy artist. That just goes to show there is now respect for various disciplines...) I guess this is what I have to look forward to for the rest of my life... I better get used to it, I'm going to be lonely when everyone in your age group and my parents go and I'm left with mine. I don't like mine so much. Speaking of which its sad but we only have a small amount of ww2 vets left. There are being coming a lost gen.

Its always a breathe of fresh air when someone is professional. I really loved the drawing sites you sent me it was so amazing. I left a review comment on the youtube for them saying I liked the professionalism as well.

Kind of funny that I wasn't focus on the breast so much as the overall body. That was an eye opener. I think I fell into the carbon stock feeling characters and the eye pleasers or what sells for too long. I feel like this was a good opportunity to branch out. I was warned about the gremlin but he never bugged me I was more having fun and if I didn't finish the 1 minute ones I was fine with it.

 FOR THE WIN!

Thank you!  Yeah, there are some other figurative sculptors here, some of which I am following, but you're right, there isn't a lot of good, traditional figure sculpture.

heh...  Nice addition!

I long ago realized that there is a beautiful fusion of free creativity and hard science when it comes to creating really good art, and all of it must be put on with plain old sweat and hard work.  Tutorials like this make that hard work significantly less frustrating and more focused on actually learning what we are doing.  Thanks again!

Thank you!  Yeah, I believe that our faith always works it's way into our art, and becomes a beautiful part of our voice. We can create beauty, reflect truth, and speak of hope in what we do, if we take the time to listen for the "still, small voice".

I watch people when I find someone (a) with interesting art, or (b) who is an interesting person.  Sometimes I'm lucky enough to find someone who is both.

Welcome.
