The pleasure's all mine, I'm very much looking forward to seeing your future paintings. Your gallery is beautiful, I'm particularly stunned by your flowers as that is something I've rarely tried and not successfully.

You're too kind! Flowers do present some unique challenges, but it helps a lot if you can sort of "look past" the flower to see and render the abstract shapes that make it up.

Yes, I can see how that would help, it's a bit like sketching in the basic shape of the skull before putting on the features and the hair etc.

Just wanted to let you know I didn't forget you, I had a harsh end of 2017, my Dad almost died from huge heart surery, hopefully he's better now, I wanted to comment on some last piece you did but forgot, sorry, I loved the last Merlin/Arthur piece you did, so powerful as always
I watch a fabulous series called "Shadowhunters" based on the Mortal Instruments novels and it's so great, I am sure you would love it, especially the openly gay couple in it, it's just amazing, sometimes, I dream of a piece done by you of these two lovebirds that are Alec and Magnus if you have time, have a look, season 1 is not that good but it improves a lot, season 2 is just wonderful and season 3 (currently on hiatus) is just amazing !!!!
Hope you are doing well, thinking of you, always
Hugs and love

Hello dear, so sorry I didn't reply sooner, I haven't been on here in months, my whole artistic thing kinda dried up.  Yeah, 2017 was rotten for me too.  My Dad had a bad fall while on holiday abroad and it seemed to set off a cancer in his chest that was dormant, (maybe it didn't, but that was really what it seemed like, as he was fine until the fall), then swiftly after he was diagnosed and within three months he was dead.  It was all rather a shock.

Sorry to hear about your Dad, I'm really glad that he's recovering well.

I've recently paired up with a lovely writer on ACBB and it's got me back into painting again after so long.

I shall give Shadowhunters a go, as you've recommended it and see what I think, thanks for the tip.  It does sound interesting.

Sorry again that it's taken me so long to reply.
Much love and hugs,
xxx

I've been a bit quiet lately, as I've been mucking around with craft type things, but I should be doing some more painting soon.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

karovie In reply to ObsidianSerpent [2015-10-05 18:26:55 +0000 UTC]

but crafts are really fun too! I'm a bit all over the place myself. I was actually doing research for a digital Merlin drawing I'm working on.. I tried to find  Merlin/Colin in the right angle so I could draw him more easily, and stumbled upon your art... and you had lots of wonderful hurt!Merlin and I ended up going through them all instead of doing what I was supposed to... hehe I thought I'd look more closely at your other art now that I have a bit more time

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ObsidianSerpent In reply to karovie [2015-10-07 17:26:40 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, craft stuff is a fun change from painting.

I've only recently started trying digital art and I'm not finding it terribly easy and everything seems to take so much longer than with real paints.  I think that's because I haven't gotten to grips with the programme properly.  I'm like you, I like to find a photo of Colin in the right sort of position or angle to draw from, I'm not someone who can draw faces just out of my head.

hurt!Merlin Yeah, hurting poor Merlin shouldn't be fun, but it is.

What digital drawing of Merlin are you planning on doing?

karovie In reply to ObsidianSerpent [2015-10-09 19:44:52 +0000 UTC]

hey, sorry about the late reply, I was bussy watching a friend's kid and wow that is really exhausting! xD

yeah I fel like there's less mess and such with digital art but I love working traditionally too.. I just.. don't find the motivation lately... it usually takes less time with digital art because you don't have to wait for the paint to dry and such.. but it all comes down to how well you know the programmes. I can do faces out of my mind if I work on them enough... but I have problems doing them from different angles and such..

I love to hurt him and make it better again <3 damn.. we sound like complete psychos when talking about this don't we? XD

well I got this idea for a little fanfic I wanted to draw because in my head it looked stunning... I suddenly changed it from a normal summer day to an autumn day... and I'm trying to do landscape which I'm not good at...  and a completely different perspective than I'm used to... wow it's gonna be really hard... it's kind of birds view of a "cliff" or hill or something and below it is forest. and Merlin lies in the leaves below the hill and Arthur has rushed to the edge to look down... ah it's way too complicated to try out new things on but o well. I hope I can finish it...

ObsidianSerpent In reply to karovie [2015-10-10 07:27:13 +0000 UTC]

Acrylic paint is really good for waiting time, as it dries pretty much instantaneously, (in fact way TOO quickly a lot of the time, if you're trying to smoothly blend a large area of sky then it can be a bit of a pain).  I agree that physical art needs a bit of motivation to get just get going.  There's a lot more mucking about before you start and after you finish...clearing a space, getting the paints and brushes out, getting the palette ready, clearing up afterwards...you need more time to take a good run at something, you can't just spend 15 minutes.  Plus, with digital art, you don't need to worry about the light, as you're doing it on the screen, but with physical painting you do really need decent natural daylight, which limits when you can do it.

The comfort is as important as the hurt I think.  It's no good Merlin just getting hurt, Arthur has to be around to fret and worry about him too.

Oh, I'm listening to the CD by Hozier at the moment.  And this song, www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dh7k69… two bodies decaying together in the countryside made me think of Merlin and Arthur...could make a very nice, (if rather depressing), Halloween painting I think...  Such a dark subject and such a pretty song.

As I said in my email, the painting is going really well so far, and I just love the autumn colours and the light on them.

I never managed to use acrylic paint. It always ended up looking like flat plastic when I tried using it. That's another reason why I'm so impressed by your work! you make it look so full of life! but yes, there's a lot of work and preperation with painting, not matter what paint you use.

yes! worried and protective Arthur is just as important as hurt Merlin!

That was a beautiful song! I think I'm gonna have to add that to my merthur/otps spotify list... I think that could be a nice (but yes, depressing!) horror/halloween painting!

Thank you I just hope I manage to do a good job on the rest of it..

Even if you never paint again (which I would be sad about, but still...), you will have enriched the quality of fanart overall with your awesome (and extremely classy) paintings. I completely understand this 'losing the muse' thing; I haven't drawn pretty much at all recently. Sometimes your creativity needs a break.
Whatever you choose to do next, it will be excellent, I'm sure!
Happy New Year!
