It's a Canon Rebel T1i, obviously an SLR, and it gives me small orgasms periodically.

Oh, tripod is veryyyy useful. Right now I just have a kinda crappy tripod and a good enough lens. I'm hoping to get my second soon enough (third technically but I don't really count my kit lens). But back to the tripod issue, flat surfaces can work just fine too. I mean, unless you're working with longer exposures often you don't really need a tripod. It's just nice to have around.

I'm actually learning long exposure technique so very much in need of a tripod, really. But i think to do it while it's still light out I'm going to need certain filters as well.

Ah, then yes go and get yourself a tripod! I haven't worked much with long exposures myself, though I recently started experimenting with it and might find myself trying it out a little more. It's pretty fun and can yield some amazing outcomes! Oh, photography, you cease to amaze me.
