# About me
I write scientific nonfiction and hard science fiction at scientifictales.com. I play with poetry and sometimes write my own attempts down, although I'm as likely to just say to my husband 'Would you like to hear the poem I just made? It isn't all terrible.' (Teenaged me would be shocked.) I write various kinds of physics course notes and can talk for longer than you might expect about why nothing in science is exact and exactness isn't even a useful goal. I write long awkward prayers and notes for roleplaying games and letters to people who don't exist. If I ever finish writing my PhD thesis (about how people approach the maths of quantum mechanics from a cognitive science/education perspective, if you were wondering) I think I might like to write a book about physics for people who aren't trying to be scientists. But the future is a strange and mutable thing; by the time you're reading this, it may not even be true any more.(Last updated April 2018)

Thank you for the llama! You seem like a very cool person, and that might be a lame thing to say but it's just that I don't think I've ever met someone that loves and writes about science but also dabbles in poetry… so thank you for introducing me to a new breed as well, lol.

Glad to let you know we exist, then. You might have to be a little crazy to put the effort into both science and art, but I think it's totally worth it.

Thought I was watching you, wtf! Also, how do you feel about the Higgs?

I like the Higgs insofar as people get excited and decide that basic science is cool and we should have money to run things like the LHC. I think the "depending on whether or not this particle exists, science changes" idea is big enough and simple enough to get across a sense of why what we're doing is neat. I dislike the Higgs insofar as people expect me to be able to explain it to them or think that they understand it. Nobody who can't do group theory and tensor calculus in their sleep has a chance of really understanding. It's nice to talk about it, but analogy can only take you so far.

Haha, didn't Feynman have the quote about nobody being able to explain particle physics?
Okay, so what about gravitational waves, quantum computing, nanomaterials, etc etc etc

Whyyy are there so many cool physics things that I don't have time to study in rigorous detail? That said, I can talk about any of them a little, and more than a little given a chance to look stuff up. This is the awesomest gravitational waves explanation if you have some science background, though: www.phdcomics.com/comics.php?f…
I'm trying to figure out effective way and places of talking and writing about this kind of stuff, actually. Academia has a way of making you (me) feel that if it's not a peer-reviewed journal publication it's not worth talking about.

Why are there so many cool physics things I don't understand?! Omg yes PhD comics! It was super popular in the lab. (I majored in bio, haha I read the entire special on gravitational waves so I have at least some idea of why they're significant. I'm holding out for discovery of the particle though, cause omfgwtfbbq.)
Dude, right?! And you can't use any sort of layman speak...or make definitive statements about anything with a P-value greater than 0.0001. No wonder people don't get it.

Because you majored in bio, silly. Or because even the physicists don't understand them. (I don't think we even know what we're looking for with the graviton, but it totally would be awesome if we found one. I hear CERN want to build a ten-times-bigger LHC. Maybe that'll do it.)

So I just learnt the word quark comes from a nonsense stand in for quarts, as in booze. Now that's something I get!

Hello! It has been a while, hasn't it? I'm doing my MSc at UCT now, which I would not have expected to lead me to finding a little more time for dA, but one way and another it seems to have done that, so perhaps I will be around some more, if intermittently. How are things with you these days?

I'm jealous! I've been studying part time since my degree so I'm only up to finishing my honours this year. Life's been twenty types of crazy. I've fallen out of the habit of writing (and occasionally sleeping enough). I wouldn't mind getting a post doc research job at some point in my life. Better than the proverbial 9-5 grind!
