Hi, I was wondering where you get the dolls you are using? Do you buy the body and then like paint it? I'm sorry if that came out rude or something.
Cause I've seen a lot of people doing still life with dolls and such and I was wondering "Where are they getting these?!"

Hey no problem, I'll gladly answer
These dolls are called BJD (Ball Jointed Dolls), you buy them online (because they come from Asia, mine is from Korea) you can buy only the body or only the head (hands are also sold separately) in my case I bought the complete figure and the make up (so the shop from where I bought did the make up) but there are also people who do their own doll's make up. It's really fun though because they are just like models, the difference being that they don't need to be paid

As far as I know you can't, they only sell the models in the website, but there are many different faces, so you most surely will find one of your taste (almost everyone does), what you can do is change the color of the eyes (by buying new ones), the make up and the hair (by buying different wigs).
It is indeed very fun, is like having your own kid, hahaha, but they aren't as troublesome
It depends on what you call expensive, normally they cost $400+, but I take that your american, right? So that's probably better for you than for me that am Brazilian, I pay almost the double (since dollar is about R$1,60 reals here :~
I normally ask a little help from my parents when it comes to my doll, hahaha

I only advise you that before buying it you could take a look around internet for English speakers BJD's forums, so you can learn more about them, read about other people's experience with dolls and take a few doubts, wish I could help you, but the forum I'm part of is for Portuguese speakers :/
Yeah, we do spend a lot in dolls, hahaha, but it's a passion (L)
