buy a d50 with a 28-80 kit lens and a 50mm f/1.8, plus some extra memory cards, and you should be good for awhile... then save the rest of your cash for when you know what direction youre heading in photography and have a better idea of what you may want.

as a bonus to buying a d50 over canon... if you have any old nikkor lenses, you can use some of them with spot or centre weighted metering on your d50 .

Okay, 'Some Old Nikkor Lenses...' I wasnt referring to manual focus specifically, but you can use most old nikkor lenses not older than 20 years... give or take...

there are very few manual focus lenses that you can use with ANY type of
metering on the D50 - the only exceptions being AIP lenses
