Normally I'm a bit skeptical about these things, but I'm actually quite intrigued. Cobra looks like Snake Plissken...

Yeah, Pirahana 3D isn't exactly the best calling card... I'm told the director is a serious fan of the series though (quite plausible in this case, Cobra has a massive following in France), so I'm still a little bit hopeful.
I'd rather it was at least made by someone with a genuine love for the material than a better known director who knows nothing about it.

Agreed. The fact that Aja is die-hard fan certainly makes it a little easier to hope for a solid film based on one of my favorite manga titles.
Plus, he got Terasawa's blessing, so....

I'm quite sure of it...I do remember reading that Aja had sought it out and had gained it.
Then again, Terasawa's work has been very popular in France (especially COBRA) so...either way, like you, I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for the best. A live-action COBRA film would be very cool...and might even help bring more of the manga over here to the US.

Yeah, I hadn't thought of that, but it would be great if some enterprising publisher could use the film as a springboard to get some more of the manga released in English. Or even if the likes of Noizumi could be persuaded to take a chance on a dvd release for the original series. Wishful thinking, I know, but hey - I was convinced we'd never see the original Dirty Pair get released either

Agreed. I still have the original issues that Viz released years ago. I also never expected to see the original DP released over here--the original TV series and the novels (well....we got two of 'em, so I can't complain). I also never thought that the VAMPIRE HUNTER D novels would make it to the US either!
Like you, I do have my concerns about a live-action COBRA, but if the end result allows for a good chunk of Cobra-related stuff to finally appear in the US, it would be worth it.
(On the other hand, I wish my French wasn't so rusty--I could try to track down the French editions of the manga and read them!

That's right, if the director is a big fan of the series then I'm sure that he will have a better chance doing the series justice compared to a big director not knowing the background of the series.
