the most common way to get points is to sell your art for points or to sell adopts of your own! also, you can set up a donation widget on your page and sometimes nice people will give you some!
however since you're new i don't know how easy that may be for you! but fortunately, i can and will definitely spot you some! ;^)

if you make adopts i recommend putting them in adopt groups to increase the likely hood of them being bought. here's some i'll recommend for ya:

you join the group, then go to the gallery and there will be a "Contribute Art" button. you select the adopt you want to submit and voila! make sure you put your adopt in the right gallery folder though!!
