I've been thinking of this, maybe you'd get a kick out of it.
For those who claim artists are wasting their lives and art isn't vitally important to society, let's take ALL art out of society for a week. No TV shows, no movies, no books, no deviantART, nothing. Live one week without ANY influence of art in our lives and then let's see how "wasteful" of a pursuit art is.
Admit it... you're considering it!

I was browsing through your gallery and marveling on how much you've matured, grown and changed as an artist over the years. What really got me was, no matter how much better you got, it never negated how awesome your earlier works were. They're still amazing, eye catching and relevant. It's like you just got better, but your old stuff never aged or began to look "dated" or even "out of date" at all. That's amazing to me!
You're a fantastic artist, and the best one out there, in my opinion, and that was my opinion long before you agreed to date me. And yes, dating your favorite artist? That's one heckuva trip! It's an honor to call you my boyfriend and the greatest honor my artwork has afforded me to get to work/collaborate with you on past projects. Thank you for being who you are and being so willing to indulge your self proclaimed biggest fangirl!

Well, I certainly noticed it while browsing your gallery. You've come a very long way, all while preserving your original talents and skills when they were relevant and up-to-date at the time. Your older work, basically, does NOT appear inferior to newer pieces. There are differences and growth, but none of it invalidates or negates the work that came before. THAT is really awesome!

Just browsed through your dA gallery while on a lull at work. Am smiling. Hard. So hard my face hurts.
I'm dating one of the best artists on all of dA. You are truly amazing, and I'd think that whether I was your girlfriend or not. Your art has such significance, meaning, socially redeeming values and positive messages. Plus, I love how your art encourages thought and conversation. Not too many people can pull that off quite like you do, and you do it in every piece you put out.
You amaze me. You have since the day I first laid eyes on your work.

Salutations! I popped in to tell you about this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strider_… This is a thing that is happening. You probably already knew, but if you didn't, I hope it makes your day, knowing you're a fan of the series. I saw the preorder page on Steam and I thought, "I know who needs to see this."

Thanks for thinking of me, and yes I've been eagerly awaiting this new Strider game. I even bought a game controller with a USB cord on it just so that when this game comes out in the U.S. I'll be ready to play it with an interface more traditional-feeling than a keyboard-and-mouse. I've been very impressed with what I've seen and read so far; whoever is working behind the scenes at Capcom and Double Helix definitely did their homework and haven't "ruined it" by changing the game into something it's not.
I honestly didn't think I'd ever see an official side-scrolling Strider game that was a combination of the NES and arcade versions and MVC series. I stopped being skeptical during the first gameplay footage Capcom made public, and I'm pretty picky on this particular game series, y'know? Yet, I'm greatly looking forward to playing this latest Strider Hiryu game in a few short months. If I remember right, it comes out in Japan on February 22nd.
Every few weeks, I've combed the internet looking for newer screen footage, more official artwork, more fan artwork, etc. (I've been pleasantly surprised how foreign nations have more up-to-date screenshots than the U.S. gaming websites do.)

So I actually broke down and bought it on Steam, and although I have to run it at an incredibly low resolution (keeps it from playing in slow motion :/ ), I am enjoying Strider greatly. I'll be honest, it was your art and writing about it that got me intrigued enough to get it. Silly me, though, forgetting its a platformer by Capcom. Even on easy mode, I die frequently, haha.

Puppetcancer In reply to DarthRonius [2014-03-18 00:00:00 +0000 UTC]
Awesome! I'd love to hear what details you're enjoying most about the game. (for me, it still impresses me that the zip-tubes from the NES version were actually included in a believable manner.)
Likewise, it makes sense now HOW Hiryu vanishes/teleports in Marvel vs. Capcom games. I could never figure out how he suddenly developed super powers in the MVC games, and I thought for sure that the fun zip-tubes were one of those features which the designers would be too embarrassed to attempt to incorporate into the 2014 version. Capcom and Digital Helix really did a great job at design and gameplay without upsetting either nostalgic players nor players who have never heard of Strider before.
If it's any consolation, it took me several days (weeks) of playing it before I figured out that...
1. The game had less slowdown when it didn't fill my whole screen.
2. Another Strider fan had publicly uploaded onto Steam a fairly-easy-to-follow series of instructions regarding how to set particular keys and mouse buttons to particular functions. (I died less often after I set the cypher as my left mouse button, the plasma catapult as the middle mouse wheel, and jump/slide as the right mouse button. This setup mimicked where my hands and fingers would go on a console controller, although other players might be perfectly fine with the default setup.)
3. I think I inadvertently play on a resolution that's small, yet it doesn't move so fast that Hiryu feels out of control. I'm not a button-masher. I'm very deliberate when I play video games, because I figure that if the action is happening at the right speed, it takes me less time to learn thoroughly and to develop the reflexes of automatically responding to particular enemies with appropriate responses. I don't enjoy games where I find myself either not having enough time to learn how the controls work or where I know exactly what my character needs to do but I end up pressing the wrong button.
4. The composer not only creatively remixed arrangements from the NES and Sega games of 1989 but also creatively remixed arrangements from Strider 2 from 1999. I'm embarrassed I didn't recognize the Strider 2 melody sooner. LOL
5. I can see now why the game is advertised as a Metroidvania side-scrolling platformer. There were at least three distinct times while playing Strider over the past month where I realized that whoever designed a particular stage or a particular boss had definitely grown up playing Metroid and Castlevania, but it's not ripped off per se. It's more like a feeling the player gets as opposed to the exact appearance or attack pattern of an enemy boss.
6. I never fully appreciated until now how the setting and background of a video game can set (and maintain) the mood from previous games in the same series, even if the features aren't cut-and-pasted. ex. I didn't get the sense very often during the newest Strider game that there were terrain features or enemies which were put in there solely as bigger-and-badder versions of the familiar versions. There were some parts of the map where I would pass it several times until suddenly realizing that the background designer put a feature visibly into the background that brought to mind stages of the older games. The designers were often pretty subtle instead of beating the players over the head with it. That's impressive! I didn't get the feeling that I was being alienated for belonging to the less profitable focus group.
Keep playing! You're in for quite a fun ride!

DarthRonius In reply to Puppetcancer [2014-04-01 19:31:59 +0000 UTC]
Those backgrounds though... It's been a while since I've played sidescroller where I stared at the background because the designer put thought in to set pieces
( and the stuff going on in it ) . I can think of only several- The Metal Slug series and the the Viewtiful Joe series are the two that come to mind right now.

Puppetcancer In reply to DarthRonius [2014-04-02 00:24:15 +0000 UTC]
My favorite background feature of Strider 2014 is how it's a side-scrolling platformer, yet there are sometimes these occasional staircases in the background. The staircases LOOK usable IF they're in a FPS, but the player knows it's not a FPS. The player can't even USE these staircases, but they appear just far enough in the visual distance (or in places where jumping is intuitively faster anyway) that the player doesn't feel cheated by trying (and failing) to use those staircases.
i.e. I love that sense of stagecraft and illusion; it's like watching a live play and appreciating that the audience is trusted to accept that the painted backdrop of a road leading into the far distance is a real road even though we know the human actors on the stage can't actually walk on that road. Strider 2014 elicited that response in me more than once.

I said that because I heard someone say she loves her husband but doesn't think they'd be friends if they weren't married.
