Your curiosity is perfectly fine, don't worry. Yes and no. A long time ago I had an idea for an FPS to be made in Unity (a game engine) I didn't really know how to use the engine at the time, but I've known how to make models for a long time. So I've been making weapon models for quite a while. I never got around to making the game, and I possibly never will, but I enjoy making weapon models. I learn from it, too. I might make the game someday with a little team or something, but for now the models are useful for whenever I want to make a little game for fun. My goodness, sorry for giving you so much text.

I make both models and textures for the models, that's true. Otherwise the models would only be one plain color. A model like that usually isn't very useful or fun.
No, I haven't seen any groups like that, but there's probably at least one group for almost anything. It seems more likely to find a group about the whole modeling/UV seam marking/unwrapping/texturing process, though. And I've seen those. Just normal computer modeling groups.
