Thanks! Sorry for the late reply, really glad people pleasingly stumble on this place. Nine's hat and facial expressions are just too sweet to pass up on drawing.

Hey there, drawfriend!
I've seen a lot of your works on the drawthreads, you do some awesome stuff with that non traditional art program. So many value studies here, it's impressive, feels like I should get on it too haha.
And thank you for the watch!

Thanks! I see your chibi work throughout the threads and I can only hope to pump stuff out that quickly with that much quality~ I may do a bunch of value studies, but yours and Megane's coloring reminds me that I really need to work on that

Oh boy so you were there. Thanks for the watch bro, I was looking for you forever.
I really dig how you use Alchemy, tried it once after seeing your amazing works and it came out all awful hahaha. I think it's all thanks to your great understanding of values.
Your studies are so great too, like, you're whole gallery is inspiring as fuck.

Quad0 In reply to Tthal [2012-07-08 19:26:05 +0000 UTC]
Thanks! A lot of it is just constant practice, all my stuff from earlier this year is embarrassing, so it was watching the rest of you guys grow that got me to get up: the endless circle of pushing forward to push others forward to push you forward.
Really dig your choice of colors and shading locations, you do a sweet job varying its style between sketching or watercolor effect or gradient style or whatever you come up with next, it always comes out really smooth and fitting.
lol Alchemy is really something I never would have played with until weekend drawfriends; popped out a really wonky 10 minute sketch of Lillet from Grim Grimoire using some of the more random features of the program and people were like 'o whoa that style is awesome!' or something to that effect, must've been a slow day with the rest of the drawfriends.
The trick I found with Alchemy is to treat it more like pencil and paper rather than painting: I literally sketch with it 80% of the time and let the program in its infinite randomness do the rest. Whenever I want to do a new limb or something, I plop down a blob of black somewhere and then whittle it into shape by sketching white around the shape until I get the silhouette I want, then start laying white down within the silhouette and switching back to black repeatedly to fine tune. Just keep hitting the 'X' key to switch between black and white on the fly and turn on Gradient if you want sweet effects. Its essentially the same thing I do in Photoshop, minus the gradient tool part.

Aww don't say that, I'm really impressed by everything I've seen in your gallery bro, but it's true that drawing with everyone sure is motivating and fun. I don't regret joining the weekend threads or the blog, even if I'm really lazy haha.
Thanks, the reason I'm sketching that much is because I want to get faster and a lot of experiments but in the end they arr rook same hahaha. Trying to understand values better nowadays so you're really inspiring.
Haha, I remember I was blown away that day. It's so rough but you manage to convey what's important somehow, they were totally right to say you are awesome dude.
YOOOOOOOOOO oh my god, that's some sweet tips bro. Thanks a lot I was having a really hard time around Alchemy haha, I'll try to play around with it more now. No seriously, it was helpful as fuck, thank you so much. I'm always overwhelmed with too much settings that why I hate Photoshop. Alchemy is really useful with it's minimal settings but the module thing is a little confusing too haha.

Thanks
Yeaa, Sai and Alchemy are so straightforward that once you pop it open and put down a mark, intuition just kicks in and something cool comes out of nowhere. PS does get daunting, and part of the reason why I just went into seclusion for a while to practice was to figure out how to make it feel like pencil and paper as much as possible, settled with just using Chalk 60 brush, a scanned color of 4B pencil shade, and constantly adjusting my flow. Still looks obviously PS, but it'll do for now.
Really need to figure out how the rest of you guys do your stuff, have a feeling my process is going about things the long way >_>

Yeah I know what you mean, I really dig the "pencil and paper" look too, it felt really nice imo. SAI does a pretty good job for now, I'm not dedicated enough to go as far as you to get these kind of effects haha.
Well I'd love to share tips too, but I don't have any secrets myself. I think that among all the drawfags on /a/ I'm definitevely one of the least interesting technique-wise, everything I do is so basic haha. You would be better off trying to get Elaizy's secrets, but if I can be a little helpful, please do tell

Quad0 In reply to Hisao-kun [2012-07-08 12:10:53 +0000 UTC]
lol thanks! I dig your linework and crosshatching, its a hell of a lot more straightforward that what I keep ending up with
The value stuff just takes forever to get, for me the trick is to not erase but switch between 2 colors, near-black and pure white, and just adjust the flow to hit different shades. Mileage may vary, but PaintTool Sai might make it easier with its sweet blending capabilities

lol thanks, I saw the 365 day blogpost link and finally found your guys' works. Love what you do for the threads: no one has the guts, practice, or patience to do environmental and its really refreshing to see someone pull it off.
I don't post a name on the drawfriends threads just to see if I'd get named somewhere else, kind of like how Panties was Sketch-kun before she said anything. The studies are generally warm ups and daily practices, I do a bunch of 30 second gestures to always have body movement and weight distribution unconsciously in my mind.

Pandaga In reply to Quad0 [2012-07-08 01:01:19 +0000 UTC]
Haha thanks, environment is pretty fun, wish more people did it. I think others could pull it off better than I can probably.
I think with the style you're delivering with I'm sure you'll get a name soon enough, to this day, I still don't have a name given yet haha, oh well. Thats pretty cool, not a lot of other drawfriends practice/studies as much as you I think, I admire this. Now I want to do gesture everyday just like you but it'll unlikely happen ;_;.

With your work someone's bound to start labeling you as something, hell I would if I could think of something witty A lot of your stuff has a lot more focused aim at emotion, that's something I need to get my lazy hind off to do.
The gesture sketching isn't really too much to integrate to normal life. I just use the resources that /ic/ has stickied, especially this place:
[link]
The timer helps out a lot, it keeps focus on just straight drawing and not dawdling on making the image look right, and setting it to 30 seconds is enough to just start feeling something being off after pumping out a few sketches. Everything else is grabbing resources from tumblr, stock pose submitters here, or grabbing images in bulk from 4chanarchives and just printing it out or sticking it on another screen, whatever that may be.

Pandaga In reply to Quad0 [2012-07-08 03:37:18 +0000 UTC]
Emotions huh? I've never really saw it like that, its probably the colors I'm using. The colors have a lot to do with the way the piece feels.
Yeah, I've checked the /ic/ resource sometimes, I can never do anything under with 30 secs since I always want to capture the whole form. I should probably use the /ic/ resource more. How long have you been drawing anyways?

Quad0 In reply to Pandaga [2012-07-08 08:38:37 +0000 UTC]
The colors are really working, especially with your later deliveries. I know what you mean by wanting to get the whole form: most of the deliveries I do in PS end up taking hours just so it looks correct. I do suggest trying out 30 second sketches for a few times, the practice does help reveal if a pose would work or not within minutes rather than spending hours trying to fix an image that's suffering from bad foundation. Everyone suggests starting a center line, which always takes practice. The unspoken trick is the hips/buttocks and shoulders: a single quick line for each of them will guide where the arms and legs are attached and their pivot guides how the arms are moving and the way each knee is bent depending on the distance each side of the hip has in relation to the floor.
Drawing for the drawfriends threads? Been taking part since beginning of the year, but all that early stuff is really really bad after looking at it these days, don't even want to stick it in scrapbook as all the proportional mistakes on them are glaring. A lot of early stuff was done strictly with pencil and paper with PS, but after a while I started messing with Alchemy and for some reason the style that that program just naturally creates became memorable on the weekend threads, so I just interchange between PS and Alchemy depending on how long I want to work on a request. Would use Sai if I had it, only played with it briefly and the brush falloff and blending on that program is amazing.
/ic/ and some of the drawfriends tutorials can have too much range in relevant assistance, they're great for stylistic understanding or finding reference images. Still go back to books, dvds, classes, and just straight looking at real life.

Yeah, thats the one thing I sort of hate, if I want to do ANYTHING serious it takes countless hours and even to this day, I still prefer drawing with a pencil. So using a tablet is such a hassle but so convenient at the same time. I'll think about the 30 sec sketches when I practice my gestures, but that totally makes sense. I like to do that too, using the hips and shoulders as the guideline of how the body will flow. I notice a lot of good artist uses that because it helps with making the character not look stiff.
Since the beginning of the year? I think thats around the time the waifu thread began too huh, now I'm curious as to what you drew in the beginning. Hey man, if you think your stuff is bad then thats a good sign, it shows that you're improving and stuff. At least you're ACTUALLY practicing. So thats the name of the program you've been using? alchemy? interesting. You can get Sai for free man, why haven't you?
true true, I usually just use them for quick guidelines and stuff, The hardest part is finding a good ref for a particular pose.
