Thanks for the faves and the crit! I promise I'll reply to the critique as soon as things settle down and I have more time to read everything. I'm glad you took the time to really consider my writing, though, I'm very flattered.

Do take your time--after all, I've been forced to do the same as I revive my online presence here at DA. And I'm fully aware that I owe you quite a bit of reading time, so I shall do my best to return the favor!

Haha, I don't think anyone's owed anything, but if you want to read more of my stuff I'd be happy to hear your thoughts.
I didn't ultimately end up replying to your critique of my essay because I mostly agreed with your criticisms. That is, they made sense. So what that probably should've led to was a revision of the essay, but I've been kinda lazy involved in other projects lately

Glad I stumbled across you, sir, via your comments to others. Until about ten seconds ago, I had no idea that DA even had a group for book reviews; furthermore, it's nice to see an articulate academic wandering the DA realm. Anywho, you seem interesting enough for a good stalking.

Why, thank you Madame! (I wondered for a while whether anybody ever bothered reading my mini-essays in the comment boards.)
While I've read _The Fountainhead_ and _Atlas Shrugged_, I must confess that I'm not a fan of Ayn Rand as you mention in your profile. The way the political right misunderstands her--along with the way she misunderstands Darwin--irks me. But I will say that her prose style is remarkable, especially for one who learned English as a second language. (Very Conradian, I suppose.)
But enough pedantry for now. Let me look through your gallery. Cheerio!

I love the mini-essay style of comment. A number of my good friends on DA are prone to it, and I periodically can be, depending on the time I have available.
I like Ayn Rand primarily for her writing and characters, and the strong sense of individualism she espouses. Also, I've liked for so absurdly long for those reasons that, even if I have complaints about her, I do know that she inevitably helped at least a little in the process of making me who I am. I started reading her in the fifth grade, because I was finally getting bored with fantasy and sci-fi and my dad had all of her novels (it's funny, my dad loves her, my mom hates her). Also, I had already read Victor Hugo (thanks to my obsession with the Disney version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame), and he was her favorite author. Knowing that helped me find connections between the two, and probably led somewhat to my subsequent humanism - I loved the idea of people being moral just because they wanted to be, and not because they were trying to appease someone or something else. That said, I've never been a part of the political right, so I never latched on to the more conservative and capitalistic portions of her writings, especially as they have been interpreted by others.
Ack, sorry to ramble so long, just wanted to provide a better idea of why I am compelled to place her as one of my favorite writers. I think she's a pretty interesting topic to discuss, as is Conrad. (And speaking of other writers whose first language was not English, there's Rafael Sabatini, author of swashbucklers like Scaramouche and Captain Blood, who writes quite vivid prose, and yet English was something like his seventh language. So envious.)
Sorry for the late reponse, by the by. Finally finished finals week, which was mostly just "write a million and one papers" week.

Quite alright! My own response is belated, thanks to holiday travel.
My own encounter with Rand was similar to yours: I read _Atlas Shrugged_ and _The Fountainhead_ in high school, and was similarly impressed by her sense of individuality and her deconstruction of "virtue" as an "altruistic" endeavor (i. e., it's not). The place where I began disagreeing with her was her stance on environmentalism, which we receive hints of in the opening chapter of _The Fountainhead_: Howard Roark looks on the landscape around him only as resources for potential use, without regard for the waste and ill effects of that use. From there, my relationship with Rand went downhill.
Congrats on finishing your finals, though--and have yourself a most merry holiday!

On another note, I seriously don't know what we're going to do when Wave goes bye-bye. I'll have to start looking for alternatives.

Aye. For now, I think I'm just going to have to dump all that text into Word files for now. Either way, I'm glad to see that you've been using DA, unlike certain folks of ill repute.
