Hey I have a question. How do you make your concepts?
I use to use Photoshop, but I moved to Illustrator so things like icons and rounded corners don't look pixelated. But working with bitmap tools are so much easier, so I'm just curious in how you approached your style. I would like to design more freely yet not have to have everything so pixelated.

I actually use Photoshop, but am planning to learn a vector tool . I use a ton of smart shapes (the closest thing to vectors in PS) and a lot of soft layer styles, along with masking. Most of the basic shapes are in black, blue or some other solid color so that I can clearly see the boundaries and fill, then a *ton* of layer styles. Hope this helps

When you say smart shapes, do you mean the presets that come with the shape tool? Well that's interesting. While they do come in handy, the functions seem pretty limited for things like icons, but your icons look pretty official. Though, I'm still not sure I follow your method. Also, I never really played around with the layer styles, so I don't really know their advantages. I'm a bit of a newbie.Β Β
You said you want to learn vector, huh? I know *a lot* of Illustrator. If you really want to learn, I can make a video of it.

Actually, I use smart shapes only for the rounded rectangle bases, most of the other stuff's done by the marquee tool. For example, in the new concepts, almost all apps have a preset base, set to white background, a drop-shadow 2px at 90Β° (for the spot-lighting effect) and a faint outer glow(ambient light). I mostly use slight dulled colours, and avoid using outlines. The base details are almost completely applied by layer styles, except for ornamentation. The real advantage of layer styles is that they're consistent and easily copyable, so you get the same effect every time. Hope this helps
And yes, I want to learn vector, and thanks for offering help, it's much appreciated! I actually like text tutorials, they allow me to go at my own pace
I learnt it (Photoshop) mostly by mucking different stuff around, seeing what'd happen. (If you'd seen some of my previous stuff, you'd have cringed! It was quite funny, and frankly ugly )
[PS. If you want, I can upload some icon PSDs. Lemme know]

Very well. I'll see what I can put together for a text tutorial for Illustrator. I'll be busy for the next few days, but I could work on it on Tuesday since I don't have work that day. I can't promise that this is what you're looking for, but I do know a lot of tricks like converting text to salable objects, type on path, add gradients, and add multiple outlines.
The text in these two deviations were done in Illustrator.

Sure, I would like to see the icon PSDs.

I'll try to upload 'em, but it'll take time: the files are horrendously messy. As for the tutorials, thanks! I'd love to see 'em, but I'll have to get Illustrator first! And what with my current situation, that might take time, so no hurries there . The thing is, I've just gotten to class XII (the final year of school over 'ere) and this actually means I won't have much free time when school starts this month

Well in that case I wish you luck. I'll start thinking about what to cover for my video, and you can check it out just when ever you get around to it. No hurries for you either.
Just to let you know, I might be leaving Illustrator for the new Affinity Designer coming to Windows. The first beta is just weeks away, and I'll be all over it. Depending on what suits you better, you may want to hold off on getting Illustrator. Affinity Designer and Photo are looking fantastic.

Oh hello again. I had to look back at what we were talking about. Right now, the Affinity Designer beta for Windows is free, but I don't know for how long.

They're not really complete, but I have a deviation of three concepts I submitted recently. If you're interested.

take a look at this. Its perfection. You should draw your inspiration from this one for Photoshop
Alos if you start working on it you could write a journal for your watchers announcing this.

Actually, I was thinking, what about an IDE? Photoshop already has a dark mode, but current IDE's look horrendous, to say the least. Would also be more interesting
