I find it all a little mind-boggling — the nuances and references escape me... I'm a bit too occidental for my own good, but I at least understand how western stories and storytelling work...

Well, yes, there actually are good ones as of anything else, but some really are TOO MUCH. The best ones are the ones that don't make you think "ANIME!" the second you glance at it, I guess. Oh well.

That's one of the great ones, as is BLAME! (although it's very confusing)

The easiest way of enjoying Akira is the film, I think, but they've changed the story a lot in it

Akira, yeah, never did like how they had Akira as bits of tat in jars in the film, not a little boy as in the comic... Seemed a bit... crap, really...

It wasn't a bad idea, per se, just didn't see why Otomo went with it... I mean, it's a bit like bigging up the Arch Fiend of a fantasy fiend, only to find out it's an incorporeal eye, or something... Er...
