I'm by no means talented. My art is pretty terrible, which I freely admit, and while I would love nothing more than to improve, the sad truth is that I just don't have the time these days.A bit about me:
I'm a college student, majoring in Multidisciplinary History with a focus on Political Science. I'm hoping to get into grad school and work as a historian, but that's unlikely.

From what I see, dating sims don't actually take as much effort as most games do, that's why there are plenty of them around the internet.

Well, yeah, compared to normal games they're way simpler. That doesn't make them easy, though. I was barely able to program the basic skeleton of a kinetic novel. I highly doubt I'd be able to actually make a full, branching-path, multiple-ending dating sim. Especially if we want this to be an actual dating sim rather than just a romance visual novel.

The best practice would be to use the Gaiden characters, especially since they don't have huge histories and reactions that would have to be accounted for. They'd be easier to develop relationships for, especially pre-Gaiden when none of them are attached.

The characters aren't really what concern me, it's the actual game itself that does. Even if we just make it a plain old multi-path romance VN, that's still a lot of work. And if we want to make it a bona fide dating sim, with stats and schedules and more freedom, it would be insane.

In legit dating sims? Oh hell yes. You have to schedule dates and then remember them, and there are dozens of places to take the girls.

Dating sims are complicated games, Ebony. Even the simplest one I've ever played, Heartache 101, was fairly complex.

...Why are they so complex? Even Virtual Novels aren't like that, the closest is Lux Pain and that's because it has a frickin emotion bar.

Because they're not about the story, they're about the characters. Dating sims are pretty much just puzzle games. You have to learn all the important details of the girl you want to go for, figure out what she likes and doesn't like, remember all the important events and react to them in a way that makes her happy, and basically just know the girl thoroughly. It's about the challenge.
Visual Novels, on the other hand, are almost entirely about the story, so it's only natural that they wouldn't be too complex. They don't need to be.

I think if you want a good idea of what a dating sim is, you should go play Heartache 101. It's really basic, but it's a perfect example of the genre.
