What do you think the best way to get "your art out there?"

Posting consistently and drawing things that are relevant to current topics and news. Posting your work anywhere other than deviantart will get it noticed usually. Get a blogspot and a tumblr. Start following people that work in the industry that you're going after. Just being active like this is your full time job and youll build followers after time. There are a lot of good small community like conceptart.org and David Rapoza MTG artist, Crimson Daggers
What part of the industry are you specifically going for there are a lot of magic the gathering artist posting on thier blogs everyday.Β linesandcolors.com/ has a lot of contacts and links for artists that paint traditionally and digitally.Β

Unfortunately i'm quite unrefined in most medias as I went to school to be an English teacher, though I'm working on painting the most probably. I'll look into what you advised and try to find a community accordingly. Thanks for the advice, it's greatly appreciated.

I spend a lot of time on the conceptart.org forums, they have lots of weekly/biweekly competitions and always give feedback for people that are learning. Like creature of the week and environment of the week. Also another community that springs to mind is artorder, specifically run by the art director that runs wizards of the coast Jon schindehette theartorder.com/ he also hold competitions, that are judged by high levels tier professionals. Uhm another place that comes to mind is www.wipnation.com/ its a place like deviantart except is got some cool feature to help show off your works in progress. here's one of mine for example, www.wipnation.com/posts?PostKe⦠the progress can be found on the right.

Again, thank you for all the suggestions. To be honest I'm a bit at a crossroads of life. I'm coming to realize that I've neglected the things I love and enjoy and instead tried to do something to please others. Without being too cliche, "I didn't follow my heart" and I now realize how much of a mistake that was. I feel like I'm playing catch up now in terms of my art and it really sucks; you being a year older than myself and so much farther along in experience and skill. Negative thoughts aside, hopefully I'll get some of my art stuff out there and will further learn the tricks of the trade. Again, thank you. Much love and best to ya.Β

Most of the people I aspire to are youger than me too, but then youll see the ocassional older person with a much more developed style, a grounded knowledge of information. Everyone blooms at different rates, ive just had a almost year break from art and getting back into it was hard, but it was a vreak I needed to have in order to find out why I like certain things and what I really want to achieve.Β
Never give up, if youre ever stuck about a stepping stone and dont know where to go let me know.
Also I've been participating, or at least are thinking of participating in some of the conceptart.org community activities, you get a week and a brief to make some art to a theme, its great portfolio building material. It would be neat to have someone to do it with, if youre keen.

Ms Stranger, thank you very much for being a supportive human being. Just to update you, I have currently dropped out of graduate school and am pursuing job applications, primarily to teach English overseas. I'm finally taking control of my life to pursue the things I want to; hopefully I'll get to do some art. Best wishes for your career and aspirations!
Best,
Brian

Hey thank you so much for the supportive words, they've come at just the right time.Β
I'm so proud of you for taking that next step and working towards what you want to do,Β
also don't be afraid of mixing your skills together if you're going to teach English overseas
you could illustrate some books to help you with your teachings.Β
Your skills amaze me, don't ever stop. <3
It's unfortunate that the skilled people often get buried by the memes and popular nonsense.Β

Thanks for the support and well wishes as always, I wish the best to you as well (especially if you're in a rough patch). While I'm currently trying to find work, if you ever want to play Dota feel free to look me up on steam! The whole USA/Australia thing might be a conflict though, haha. Keep up the arting!

Oh wow, thanks for taking the time to reply. I love the colour pallets you work with and your lighting is great. I've got a lot to learn from you. If there's anything you think I could improve on in the future I'd love to have some feedback. Also I'll be sure to do the same for your work too.
Thanks again.

Eee! Thanks for taking the time to comment, I'm going to learn a lot from your work. I need to concentrate on trying more bold strokes, and making my work look less like digital. S: Which youre really quite good at

Your digital paintings are fantastic, and I especially enjoy your landscapes. I don't know how folks get so good at creating digital paintings that really look like paintings, but I applaud you. ^_^

Hey I was wandering through your gallery and we've come from similar styles and colouring methods. Ah photoshop can be a hard mistress to tame sometimes.

Thanks for visiting, Red!
Yes, Photoshop can be challenging. I am often befuddled by all of its features, though I am learning some new tricks this year. I do find the more familiar I am with traditional mediums, the easier working in Photoshop becomes. It seems to be a common trend among the artists I've heard from on the matter.
