You think they're making sequels of them?? I figured they were just producing them so non-comic readers had an idea on the character's background before the Avengers came out.

That IS the reason- give the non-comic readers a heads up of sorts. But Marvel takes care of its fans- and they know that there's a lot of money that can be made off of several more movies. Besides, there's barely a single movie these days that DON'T get a sequel. Even the bad ones. (Alvin and the Chipmunks, Mask, Speed, and a slew of other horrid movies)
The actors have already signed for trilogies of each movie (with exception of Edward Norton/Hulk), Iron Man 3 is about to begin filming in North Carolina (or something like that), the writing for Thor 2 and Cap 2 will be finished by middle of next year... yeah, they're going full steam with this stuff!

And yeah, the guy who did 300 and The Spirit and SuckerPunch and all those movies (Zack Snyder) is writing and directing it. They've already started filming, but it doesn't come out till 2013 (they don't want to compete with Dark Knight Rises and Avengers next year). They've got a few photos online- check them out!
